Christmas is responsible for more waste and consumption than any other holiday. North American’s trash contributions to the landfill increase by 25% during this time of year – which equates to a minimum of 25 million extra tons of garbage going to the landfill. By recognizing the incredible waste that is generated the urgency to do something becomes apparent.
A truly useful or environment friendly gift that provide some convenience or financial benefits is a better ecological choice. At the same time, you can help alleviate the guilt you might feel during this period of high consumption and travel activities. Here is a brief list of frugal and environmentally sound ideas to inspire you.
For the homeowner – A thermostat control that automatically turns the heat down at night; low flow showerhead attachment; draft cozy (placed in front of doors to prevent drafts) and tubes of caulking or weather stripping. Dimmer switches, compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL’s) or hot water tank and hot water pipe insulation kits are also excellent ideas. Yellow CFL’s are perfect for exterior lighting because they attract fewer insects. Consider making an eco-package combining some of these items for the homeowner.
For the gardener – A subscription to an organic gardening magazine or a membership to a seed organization is always an interesting gift idea. Bird, bat and butterfly houses, baths and feeders – or the patterns to build them – are a wonderful optional gift. Alternatively consider composting worm bin, gift certificate to a nursery or a membership with an environmental group.
Give Services – Rather than giving an item that must be wrapped, consider purchasing tickets to a performance, restaurant gift certificates or services such as lawn care, diaper, cleaning, music lessons, exercise or dance classes, tune-up or tire rotation services. Don’t forget to look at dog walking, babysitting, and massage, spas or gyms when looking at gift certificates. All of these ideas will help you support local businesses that you believe in while giving something that the recipient can truly benefit from.
Give Food – Home preserves such as dehydrated or canned foods make excellent gifts. Those that find cooking tasks cumbersome treasure frozen meals. Snack foods and deserts are appreciated by most anyone; keep in mind that purchasing Brazil or cashew nuts supports a tropical rainforests. Baskets of healthy foods are another wonderful idea to consider – especially if it contains samples from local producers.
Books – Most of us realize the benefits of literacy and supporting local businesses. You can do both by choosing to purchase books as gifts this year. However, we can also leave a legacy with a book of our own. This could be a journal, a collection of our poetry, a family tree that you’ve researched or even a family recipe book. Perhaps you might consider including quotes from family members or people you admire and possibly a few favorite family photos.
Alternative gifts – A reusable coffee filter and whole organic coffee beans makes a nice gift for coffee lovers. Consider slippers and sweaters – the recipient is less likely to turn up their thermostat. Toys and games with positive environmental or education values and those that emphasize cooperation, exploration or creative thinking. If you choose to purchase electronics, consider those powered by solar or rechargeable batteries.
The Tree: Give or purchase a living tree for yourself this year (it removes carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, ammonia, ozone and nitrogen oxides). A living Xmas tree can be donated to individuals with space on their land, the city, schools or parks when the season is over. Alternatively, plant it in your own yard for privacy, summer shade or soil and water erosion control.
The Photos – For holiday photo memories, avoid disposable cameras. Instead use a digital camera and load directly to your own computer and CD burner. Alternatively, use a normal camera using 36 exposure film rolls and have the pictures put on CD’s at the development outlet. Choosing these options reduces chemicals, paper and waste, while you save some cash.

Many times, we see others as well as ourselves getting into the debt trap very easily. A deadly debt trap never allows the savings to remain with you. However hard you try to save money, you ultimately spend them on paying huge interests on your accumulated debts. So what all, does it take to save money and lead a care-free life without debts? To crack this puzzle, you need not think hard.
While we can see various reasons trigger one deep down into the word of debts, we can broadly classify these so-called reasons as personal, economic and social. Personal situations may include reasons like loss of job, cut in the pay, accumulation of existing debts, treatment of illness, family crisis and so on. Personal situations are never predictable and so one should always be prepared for any such crisis contingencies, which can cause a major blow to the income. It is always advisable to set aside some portion of your income in a different bank account, so that it can be effectively used during such contingencies.
Coming to the economic triggers, one can get blown away with a sudden loss in business, tumbling sales, bad debts, inflation, economy slowdown etc. Currently, we are indeed witnessing the recession in the economy with the cost of living doubled and the means of income reduced.
While personal and economic reasons may be unpredictable, social triggers definitely are self- sponsored and can be truly avoided by adopting certain means. Don’t you think you will be in a posh car showroom tomorrow, if today you see your junior colleague getting that swanky car to the office? Yes, I am talking about status anxiety. As you put a step ahead each time in your career and status, you always tend to get anxious about maintaining the same. As a result, you do not even hesitate for a single moment and delve deep down in the debt-pool.
When we go out for shopping with our friends, we do tend to splurge more than what we actually should. Many things are purchased just because “My friend also bought it”. And to make things simpler, we always carry the very famous “plastic money” with us. Credit cards had come as a convenience, but now we use it to satiate our status hunger. Although, it may sound a little strange, but it’s always wise to ask yourself a small question “Do I need to buy this?” before you actually swipe your card for the purchase.
And what happens next is the rather unending sequence of debt repayments. If you have bought an exotic product on debt, just check out the interest rate you are paying on the actual or principal amount and then you would come to know the real worth and utility of the product.
You get into debts largely because of two reasons – Improper planning and tendency to spend more. Always remember that debts should be availed ONLY if necessary and ONLY to the extent of what you can repay without much encumbrances. Budgeting, planning and control are three simple, yet magical keys to have a debt free life.

In order to secure that deserved job promotion, you often need to obtain a higher education level. One great way to do that is through online learning. You can even get Online Masters Degrees this way. This exciting and innovative means for professional and personal improvement can allow you to earn your desired graduate degree, to enhance your available career opportunities.
People who earn Masters Degrees typically get higher pay, more challenging and interesting work, and growth potential of an unlimited nature. Online Masters Degrees can really help those seeking job promotions from within their current organization or from other prospective employers. They can also help those wanting to completely change their professional lives altogether. Online colleges offer both flexibility and convenience. Many have accelerated degree programs online. Most also allow students to pursue graduate degrees upon a part-time basis.
Online degree programs offer many advantages over traditional classroom-bound degree programs. You do not need to reside near a college or university when you can take classes online. Online graduate school programs are also great for those who have been out of school for some years. Getting back into an academic routine for school projects and class work should be easier, and fitting in with younger class members should become less of a concern.
Online course availability is also generally more convenient for those already working full-time or caring for families. Students can keep their day jobs or maintain other familial responsibilities by enrolling in evening or weekend course sections, when they must take courses that require their online presence at a given time.
Many excellent, accredited universities can be found online, offering many types of programs and areas for further study. Colleges and universities may supplement their traditional campus programs with online courses, or they may exist as online-only schools. Today, most traditional institutions of higher learning also offer some online learning options to remain competitive. Either way, you can obtain advanced degrees in business, nursing, health care management, information technology, education, liberal arts, or many other fields.
Financing any sort of college degree can be quite expensive, but your return on that educational investment is generally very good. Even though graduate tuition is typically much pricier than undergraduate tuition, you should remind yourself how many high-earning professionals have advanced degrees. Even at the graduate school level, you may still qualify for student loans, grants, and scholarships. You just need to check with your school of interest, since certain types of aid require certain qualifying requirements such as full-time student status. Many employers may also willingly pay for all or some of an employee’s higher education tuition, as part of a good company investment in its people and its organizational future.
Although many people believe that Online Masters Degrees are inferior to Masters Degrees that were obtained through traditional classroom settings, that assumption is not necessarily true. Excellent online programs can offer comparable opportunities for producing group work, utilizing both interpersonal communication and independent study. Additional self-motivation and self-discipline may be needed for students to complete a degree online, but the time management skills that they finely hone in the process can prove advantageous. Their high degree of comfort with cutting-edge Internet technologies can also prove advantageous. Online attainment of your Masters Degree can be both valuable and convenient for broadening your career horizons.
Phil Rogers is working two jobs, to support a wife and 4 kids. He’s trying to find ways to get his Masters Degree Online so he can pay off his Credit Card Debt. He is also considering taking a Online Project Management Course

Golf course fronting estates became popular in the 1980s, and have since become a common feature of suburban America. Golf-front living can offer some excellent benefits such as outstanding views, having access to your favorite hobby in an instant, a quality business in a safe neighborhood of other quality homes, and, most often, like-minded neighbors. However, there are also some draw-backs. Deciding what is right for you means getting informed and analyzing your priorities.
There is a difference between golfing communities. Some are focused around the course, while others are residential neighborhoods foremost, with the course as a side benefit. Further, a surprising number of golf-front residents don’t even play golf. While the idea of the typical golf-front real estate owners is retirees and golf-fiends, many younger families choose these neighborhoods for their safety, beauty and quality. They are buying a lifestyle, and a home with excellent appreciation value.
However, depending on where your home is situated, there is the obvious risk of stray balls ending up in your yard, or worse, through your window. Some golf community residents have even been known to be bothered by golfers coming onto their property to retrieve balls. But in general, these risks are worth the benefit of living in such an amazing and valuable location.
Of course (pun intended), not all homes are right on the green. There will be lovely homes across the street and within a few blocks of the actual course which still offer the convenience of the close proximity to the course and the great neighborhood, but without the risk of stray balls and trespassing golfers. Although there’s always a trade-off , as the views aren’t likely to be as lush in these homes.
If you do purchase golf-front property, look for insurance policies that give a good rate for unlimited partnership replacement. In general, knowing the risks of an area makes you responsible for any damage done, however, some clubs have been tax to pay for damages, or erect safety fences or nets in extreme circumstances. A responsible course developer should take the risks into account, and minimize them throughout the design of the course. If specific course features make your home consistently a dangerous area, or if the course was redesigned after your home was built, putting it more at risk, consider requesting help from the course owners to minimize your risk. However, if the stray balls are purely accidental, accept the risk and pay for good insurance. Buying a home behind a green, or right next to a tee box, as opposed to a few yards up from it, may allow you to avoid the highest risk of having your home visited by stray balls. Further, there is some evidence that homes on the right side of the fairway are more often hit by erroneously sliced balls.
When weighing the pros and cons of a golf community, consider association fees, and also rules and regulations associated with living there. Also, assuming you’re a golf-lover, be sure you love the course-otherwise you miss out on the advantage of living so close.
Finally, when considering a golf-front home, don’t buy sight unseen. Considering the risks, and benefits, of certain areas, it is best to know exactly where your home is situated before committing your hard earned money to it.

Outsourcing of software design may have led to the loss of some jobs in the high-cost labor markets. However, the benefits derived from software design outsourcing are immense and it is extremely difficult to not acknowledge them. A classic example wherein such benefits are clearly visible is a tax software product business site builder. Low cost, greater convenience and enhanced usability have made this simple software tool an instant hit among website developers.
Web design was very different before outsourcing became popular. Web designers charged large fees for their website design. Ordinary people could not create their own websites because of the high cost that web designers charged even though their work was high quality. But, things have greatly changed when outsourcing firms launched site builder software.
Thanks to this software, people who are not trained in programming partnership are better able to set out and design our website. This software has menus and functions that are written in a language that is easy to understand and follow through.
Finding cost-effective site builder software is possible no matter what sort of themes or granularity you have chosen for your site. Rest assured that you will be able to find a product that allows for push button posting of articles, pictures and videos, as well as the ability to embed a variety of communicative tools, such as forums and teleconferences wherever you would like to put them in your website.
If you want to determine what the best site builder software is for you, from the numerous options, you can read many expert reviews of of the best design tools out there. These tools have been categorized by experts into groups of main functionalities. This makes it much easier for website builders to compare services and decide which one is right for them.
Remember that any tool is as good as you are. We mean to say that unless you understand how to ensure maximum utilization of the functionalities offered, no tool can help you design a great website. Read the technical manual and start practicing the usage of site builder to build dummy websites. This will ensure that you are fully prepared to use the tool for creating your own website.
Outsourcing may not be such a bad thing, after all…While many consider this trend to have caused the loss of many jobs in higher-cost labor markets; the benefits have been many and undeniable. A perfect example is a simple software product called site builder. It’s inexpensive, incredibly easy to use, and is fast becoming the “it” program among website developers who try it. When outsourcing firms launched this software, it revolutionized the industry. Web site design used to be a much more complicated affair that necessitated big expenditures on web designing professionals.

When it comes to embracing net technology silver surfers are leading the way, according to recent research from two leading online advertising and measurement companies.
Those aged 55 and over are classified as silver surfers, referring to the prevalence of grey hair amongst the age group and research has identified that it is they who are logging on in ever greater numbers following the widespread roll-out of broadband across Europe. At the end of 2007 almost twice as many silver surfers were using the internet as at the start of the year, with a survey from net Value recording a staggering 90% increase.
So, proof that the older generation has eagerly embraced the internet and for them one particular feature is a godsend: online banking. Indeed, a survey by the European Interactive Advertising Agency (EIAA) found that 53% of silver surfer respondents did their banking online, taking advantage of the convenience of arranging their finances from the comfort of their own home.
The EIAA survey also found that older people spend almost 78% of their weekly average 8.8 hours online for personal reasons. As well as banking, the older generation also spend a lot of time investigating their family tree and shopping. They also spend more cash per head on the internet than any other age group, including surprisingly those in the 18 – 24 range, blowing apart the myth that the net is a youngsters’ phenomenon.
The major UK banks have not been slow to pick up on the rise of the silver surfer and typically offer products designed to appeal to more affluent people, particularly those looking for a monthly income from interest payments. So, in addition to providing day-to-day online banking via a current account most banks now offer online saving accounts, many of which offer a higher rate of interest than would be available through the branch network.
For example a monthly income online savings account can be set up to transfer the monthly interest automatically into the account-holder’s current account. Monthly income accounts are very popular amongst retired people as are other types of accounts that offer significantly higher interest rates in return for tying up the capital for a specified period.
It is these types of accounts that are attracting affluent and net-savvy silver surfers, although they are not exclusively for that age group. But, while the amount of older people on the net continues to grow you can be sure that banks will be rolling out accounts designed to appeal to them in ever greater numbers.

If you’ve been researching your options and are considering getting a debt consolidation loan in order to improve your budget situation, your cash flow, and your total debt load, I’m sure you’ve seen some of the reasons detailed taxes suggest that moving forward is a great idea.
These reasons are always followed up taxes a litany of reasons why debt consolidation is a bad idea. There are a few negatives associated with debt consolidation – if you don’t make changes in your mindset and the way in which you deal with money.
First of all, the reasons for you to get a debt consolidation loan are pretty compelling:
- Generally lower overall payments
- Ability to combine multiple debts into a single monthly payment
- Lower interest rates – especially if debts being consolidated are credit cards or many types of high interest consumer loans such as computer loans, furniture loans, etc.
- Possible tax advantages
When you combine all of the benefits together into a debt consolidation loan, the benefits are compelling and the savings are real. The benefits of consolidating today far outweigh the negatives. While we’re on the subject I’ll go ahead and address the perceived negatives and explain the reasoning behind my position that they’re really not negatives at all, but undeveloped opportunities.
The reasons most frequently cited as reasons to avoid taking proactive steps to improve your financial situation with debt consolidation as a vehicle for driving you out of your current debt problems are as follows:
- You’re not likely to be able to handle the temptation to repeat the same financial mistakes that put you into this situation in the first place
- A debt consolidation loan puts your home at risk – and not just your credit rating
- It could take longer to pay the debts off than it might if you don’t get a debt consolidation loan
Do you see a common thread in all of these reasons cited for avoiding debt consolidation?
They all have one thing in common: They all involve your mindset and your commitment and dedication to achieving a specific goal. This is grade school stuff – and it’s easy to overcome.
It’s true that you’re going to be faced with the temptation to make the same money mistakes again that gave you a huge stack of unpaid bills.
The solution is to close the accounts and take away the opportunity to repeat the vicious cycle of debt. If you don’t have the accounts any more you can’t very well charge them up again.
If this is a concern that you have, after you close the offending accounts, contact the credit reporting agencies and request that they “lock” your credit.
This will prevent you from using credit as a crutch to make impulsive purchases. You’ll still have access to your credit in a pinch, but you’ll have to work a little to get to it.
This strategy isn’t so different from the dieter who forces themselves to walk 5 miles to the convenience store if they want a cookie. It won’t stop you from getting it, but you’ll have to be really dedicated to getting it in order to expend the energy in laying your hands on it.
It’s no secret that a debt consolidation loan puts your home at risk. However, if you refinance when you get a debt consolidation loan you can kill many birds with one stone. You can snag a great new – and much lower – interest rate, reduce the number of bills you have going out each month and generally improve your financial situation.
Sure your home’s at risk; however, you have to live somewhere. With your home being on the line you’re much more likely to do whatever it tax to change your mindset about money.
If your monthly payment is still less than you could expect to pay if you were paying rent, you still win. If you fall down in the mud you shouldn’t decide to stay there because you’ll have to clean yourself if you get out.
The last reason given for avoiding debt consolidation is that it could take longer to pay off than if you don’t get a consolidation loan. It could take longer, but it’s not likely. It can take 25 years to pay off a credit card by making minimum monthly payments. The interest staggers the imagination. Even if it takes you just as long to pay down a debt consolidation loan the interest rate is likely to be much lower. A 20-25% interest rate could be as close as a late payment or two.
As you can clearly see, you’re absolutely better off taking positive steps to improve your situation than in doing nothing. To do nothing is to get nowhere. Going nowhere financially has never changed a thing in anybody’s life. Don’t you agree?
