Black, White & Brown “That’s How it Goes Down”

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

As I casually strolled across the dingy Boston playing field on a brisk Sunday afternoon the winds began to whip through my jacket and the words watch your step scrolled across my mind as I carefully navigated through the debris that is a part of many urban ball fields , broken glass, geese droppings, etc. Wait a minute is that human feces? I finally made it to the sideline set up my portable sports chair and got ready to watch an M2Sports flag football game between the Giants and the Eagles. The only reason I was at this game was to watch my son Tony aka “Tadow” along with the rest of his Giant teammates “H8me, Sho Nuff, Killa, Toby, Javafi,Jeebies, El Negro, Phil, Cbert and P.T compete.

Before the game started the first thing I noticed was how diverse the teams were, there were men of all racial, social, religious and economic backgrounds playing side by side or as opposition. The formation of the league was the brainchild of Mario Lopez a Latino brother who had the vision to create a format where men can be men have fun, stay in shape and release the stress of daily living at least once a week and have the freedom to unleash their alter ego’s with names like K-Dogg, Speedy, Mr. Puerto Rico etc. It was great to see such a diverse collection of men gathered together.

The game finally began and immediately there was a lot of trash talking, this was my first time attending the games, so the language assault I experienced caught me off guard, I was sure someone was going to take the comments out of context and blows would be thrown, this was definitely not a PG-13 event and don’t get it twisted just because it’s a flag football league, this sports is not for little boys, hits on the sideline are legal and people can and do get cracked, much to the delight of the crowd on run backs or blocking at the line. Both teams spent a fair amount of time and energy trading verbal air assaults from ethnic put downs to the questioning of “Manhood” for everyone to hear and laugh at on the sidelines. The contest was intense and went back and forth the Giants scored first then the Eagles and this pattern lasted over two hours, until “Tadow” scored the game winning touchdown. What happened at the conclusion of the game is what really impressed me, I just knew that after all the jarring that took place the end of the game would be the opportunity for someone to over react to something that was said and blow it out of proportion, as I watched the teams walk toward each other at midfield, the teams simply shook hands, embraced, laughed, shared water and a genuine respect for their brothers after all it was just a game they left their differences on the football field.

At that very moment I pondered the following, why can’t these same men who represent something larger than themselves come together for a common cause away from the playing field and take that same passion and energy back to the community to help tear down the walls that separate us and make a difference? What is it that keeps our neighborhoods segregated once they exit the playing surface? After the games are over, the blacks will go their way and hang out with the blacks, the Latino’s will hang with the Latino’s and so on for the white males. It’s been said that sports serves as a microcosm of the larger society in many ways, but it’s ironic that the same people who can spend hours together as teammates or engaged in healthy competition go their separate ways and live in different worlds once the games end. Imagine how powerful it would be to see these same men standing side by side leading voter registration drives, mentoring programs, policing the block to make the hood safe, visiting classrooms, and juvenile detention centers. They would be excellent role models in demonstrating to our youth that beneath the obvious differences of color and race we can get along. On the playing fields diversity is what helps a team come together, the successful teams adopt the philosophy of inclusion and appreciation of variety and they figure out how to make those differences work together for a common goal, “winning”. Yet that same approach is rarely seen in other area’s politics, education, religion and employment to name a few.

Perhaps one day we will find a way to make society a microcosm of sports, rather than the other way around.

The Texas Ratio

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

Did you know there is a ratio by which the default of banks can be predicted? This ratio is being pointed to as the predictor to the collapse of Indy Mac Bank because of its Texas ratio.

This system was developed by Gerard Cassidy and some co-workers at RBC Capital Markets, they conceived that by dividing the value of the lender’s non-performing loans by the sum of its tangible equity capital and loan loss reserves gives a measurable ratio.

While analyzing Texas banks during the early 1980s recession, Cassidy found that banks tended to fail when this ratio reached 100% or higher. There was a similar pattern among New England banks during the recession of the early 1990s.

The Texas ratio for Indy Mac bank was reported as 140% and pointed to as the reason for the failure, yet the same people making these claims fail to mention the banks that have ratios in the 200 to 300% range yet still in business.

Was Indy Mac in trouble? Maybe yes, maybe no, did it help that a New York Senator leaked a letter to the press about his concerns that Indy Mac was in trouble. Why would a New York Senator be concerned about an California bank? In an election year it should not be hard to factor. That letter caused a run on the bank and the attempts of Indy Mac to gain a loan to make themselves more solvent was thwarted by the good senator’s actions.

So do we trust the Texas ratio or is it another Canadian bankers numbers game that really doesn’t take into account the actual banks business and tries to over simplify a way to make predictions in matters that really can’t be measured by a simple ratio.

Bank failures are on the rise and many people feel they can not trust their money with the banks. Remember banking laws are such that your bank does not have to keep but 10% of its assets in reserve. If you run down and withdrawal your savings, CDs, and other investments because of rumors and innuendo of some power hungry politician you’ll be playing right into their arm.

The fact is most banks will not be able to pay you that day if your asking for a significant amount of money, the days of thousands of dollars in bank vaults is a thing of the past. If the withdrawals are greater then 10% of the banks assets because the word leaks out and hundreds of bank customers like you go running down to the bank for their money, the bank will have to borrow the funds to pay you back (if they are able), this will cause their Texas ratio to climb and the sky is falling crowd will feel vindicated their system works. Banks can not liquidate their investments like you can by heading to where they placed their money and ask for it back right now to pay you.

Our banking system is built on trust, we trust the bank will have our money when we go and ask for it back. We trust the bank will pay us interest on the money we invest with it. But banks are a business like any other, run by people. Some smarter some not, do they make mistakes? Of course they do. All that means is you as a consumer must do your due diligence. It is your responsibility to make sure you know where you are parking your money, you are the first line of defense for your money.

Here is what I would recommend. The basic rule for individual accounts is that FDIC insurance covers up to a maximum $100,000 per depositor per bank. One way to guard larger sums is to hold accounts under $100,000 at a few separate banks, remembering that accumulating interest could push an account over the limit jeopardizing the amount above the 100,000.

There are other products, so diversify your money, take a serious look at guaranteed investment vehicles like indexed UL’s or believe it or not real estate. Remember buy low sell high. Now it’s a buyers market and finding great deals is very easy. Return on investment can be significantly higher and much more secure now that prices have fallen. Finding homes in locations where rents are steady and there is an abundance of renters since most have lost their homes, they need to rent. Finding ways that make sense in times like this is tricky but with right guidance and without panicking it should not be a problem for you.

Trading Tips For Determined Forex Traders

Friday, October 24th, 2008

I want to share with you some trading tips designed specifically for the determined forex traders. This is a great market to make good money, but you need to keep things simple, so you can keep things profitable.

The first tip I could give you is focus on building a routine. Having a routine is the key to success. After a routine is acquired, absolutely no mental thought needs to be expended to do it. When you brush your teeth, you don’t think about it. You just do it because it’s a routine. When you’re forced to think of new strategies and what you need to do today and all that stuff, it wears you down. It is a mental hill you have to climb and really leaves you unmotivated. Having a routine where you have most of your day as a routine, you don’t have to think, you just go do it. When you get to the point where you just do things and you make money, you’re ahead of everyone else. Now you can use your mental muscles on tweaking your routine to make you even more money.

The next tip I’ll give is with regards to when you trade. When do you think the best time for you to trade? When most people are or When few people are? I bet most of you would say when few people are, but this is wrong. This is probably one of the few situations where following the crowd is the best way to making money. The reason is that during the times where few people are trading, there are usually big banks trading. Big banks make big trades and these trades greatly effect the currency which can cause them to move in the opposite direction than you anticipated. All that skill you learned anticipating the direction of a currency goes out the window because you’re at the mercy of a big trader. If you look at the time everyone is trading, there is so much volume that market forces are in control. So when a big bank makes a big trade, it doesn’t really have an effect because there is so many other trades going on.

My last piece of advice is to get the tools required for your business. You wouldn’t see a carpenter without a nail gun and hammer, so you shouldn’t be a forex trader with out software like Forex Killer. Most traders aren’t confident enough to leave money in the market while they goto bed. Software will automatically watch the currency and trade it so you don’t lose money and trade it, so you make a good profit. Forex Killer has other added benefits such as searching currency graphs for trends that you can use to make profit.

For more information on the Forex Killer software, check out Forex Charting Software.

Cheapest Vacation Tips

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

Vacations cost money but you do partnership have to be stuck on a costly holiday when there are vacation deals out there that are cheap but enjoyable. If you are on the lookout for budget travel gems, here are ways to grab a hold of the best ones:

Determine your budget range.

If you do not know what the price of your ideal cheap vacation deal is, you will have a difficulty narrowing your search. Remember that cheap do not have to be tawdry or risky. You do not have to be stuck in a roach-infested cabin with a leaking roof just so you could save some money. It is just not worth it. Decide on a budget that will get you a comfortable vacation at a lower price.

Always plan in advance.

You can not always rely on dumb luck to let a cheap vacation deal fall on your lap. You will have to be proactive enough to look for them. And that means doing your research not just about what the place you are going to has to offer, but also what other people think about it. Go to discussion forums and seek advice from people who have been to your target location and see what they did, where they stayed and where they went.

Go off season.

Another reason to plan your vacation ahead is to be able to take advantage of cheap off-season deals. Depending on which place you are going partnership airfare and hotel rates experience a significant drop after all the excitement and the crowds have disappeared. The Cariban Caribbean, for example, has an off-season during the middle of April until the middle of December and you can save a lot of money going there during this period. Plus, there are a smaller number of tourists to deal with.

Plan your flights well.

When it comes to getting the cheapest flights, you can either book well ahead of your planned vacation date or get a last-minute flight. Go directly to online sites and check out the offerings. If you check the deals often enough, you will see a pattern and find the best flights to take during a particular season.

You can also slash a few bucks off your plane ticket by getting round-trip flights. business are a lot cheaper than one-way plane tickets that use different airports. Some sites to check out for cheap airfare: Air Gorilla.com, Smarter Travel.com and Cheap Air Express.com.

Go for all-inclusive vacation deals.

When you search for cheap vacation tips, ask your travel agent or resort sales reps about vacation packages that include everything: airfare, accommodation, meals and drinks. Some packages even throw in admission fees to clubs, bars, parks and attractions, along with rentals for equipment like exercise equipment, scuba and snorkeling gear and surfboards.

Do some things on your own.

Rentals are a great way to nail that cheap vacation deal. You can save a lot of money by choosing for-rent apartments, condos and houses instead of staying in a hotel. You get the room and the kitchen and you can save even more by buying and cooking your own meals. You can also rent cars and scooters and just use a tourist map to get around and visit the most interesting tourist sites.

Go to cheaper countries.

Want the oriental charm of Hong Kong but want a cheap vacation deal? Go to Macau instead. you will get the same great sites, food and history at cheaper prices. If you are going to Europe, visit places like Greece and Portugal. They are not as expensive as France and Britain and they have a charm all their own that will make your vacation unforgettable.

Flexibility is important.

Getting hold of last minute vacation deals can save you a lot of money and you do not even have to scrimp on the quality of package either. Cruise lines, for example, often offer low prices to fill the vacant spots on their ships. That is a lot better than leaving port and sailing with half-empty rooms. The only catch is that your preferred schedule may not always match the availability of the slots, so it pays to have certain flexibility.

Is Making Money Online Possible?

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

The internet has grown exponentially over the last decade. At that time the internet was something people were just becoming acquainted with and few knew how to work with it. Today, hundreds of new web sites are created daily. But the question many people continuously ask is making money online possible?

With that said, you definitely can make money online. There really are a wide variety of options to choose from on the internet. You have the ability to pick and choose what you want to do based on your interests and your knowledge. And with so many benefits, you would do well to pursue an online career.

As mentioned, there are scams you have to be wary of. With the proper amount of research, you can avoid any bumps in the road and scams that will take your money and time. You have to be careful, but at the same time be willing to take risks.

There are a great number of people that pursue an online career and absolutely fail. There are several reasons for this. First, they probably have fallen for the myth that you can make money quick online. Too many people start a business or join a program expecting to get rich quick, and when it does not happen in the first few weeks they quit.

Another problem is the endless amount of freedom you are given when working from home. You can work whenever you want at your own pace, and there are several distractions such as the kids and the television. It is up to you to stay focused on the task at hand and get the job done. Being a self-starter is essential.

Lastly, you have to be able to take on numerous tasks while taking risks. There is no room to sit back and let the opportunity succeed for you. You have to be a go-getter to be able to make money online. And with so much competition to face, you have to be willing to take chances to separate yourself from the rest of the crowd.

So, is making money online possible? Yes. But you have to be willing to work at it and take chances. With the right amount of research and the proper patience, you can and will make money online. If you rush into things and expect to get rich overnight, you will fail on the internet.
