Frederick H. Ecker became President of the Metropolitan on March 26, 1929, and associated with him as Vice Presidents were Robert L. Cox and Leroy A. Lincoln. Mr. Cox died in January of the following year, and Mr. Lincoln immediately assumed the position of second in command. He succeeded to the Presidency in March 1936, when Mr. Ecker became Chairman of the Board. When the new administration took office in 1929, the country was enjoying what appeared to be great prosperity.
Many men in business and in public life believed that we had attained a depression less economy. Corporate earnings were at a high level. There was frenzied activity in the stock market and in the flotation of new securities. Prices of common stocks reached dizzy peaks. Credit was easy to obtain. The growth of the Metropolitan and of other life insurance companies reflected the optimistic spirit of the times. All prospered as a result of the great business activity and the high rate of employment at good wages then prevalent throughout the country.
The first hundred billion dollars of life insurance rates in force had been attained; predictions were being confidently made that within another 10 years the second hundred billion would be added. But in October 1929 came the first manifestation of a series of cataclysms which shook the country and the world. The first stock market crash came almost out of a clear sky. The full significance of this indication of economic distress was little understood at the time. Many people suffered immediate losses. Many held on to their securities while prices were dropping sharply, only to sell them at even lower figures at a later date, or to be closed out for lack of margin.
Nevertheless, there were many in high places that refused to believe that this was more than a temporary financial setback. Although the national income fell in 1930 and 1931, it was still at a fairly high level. Because of the low prices to which common stocks had fallen, various recommendations were made in the late autumn of 1929 urging the life insurance companies to make such purchases in anticipation of rapid economic recovery.
The State laws governing life insurance investments specifically forbade such venturing. Undoubtedly great havoc would have been wrought in the financial structures of many companies and great losses suffered by policy holders if such advice could have been taken. The market quotations as they dropped from month to month thoroughly confirmed the prophetic warnings of Mr. Ecker, and justified his insistence that the law limiting the character of the investment portfolio of Life insurance companies should remain essentially unchanged.
The life insurance companies stood firm. Because of the character of their portfolios, they were not seriously affected by the declining values. In some respects, the very nature of the upset at the close of 1929 reacted favorably upon the companies. Many individuals who had lost heavily in the stock market felt called upon to increase their Life insurance in order to make good the losses to the estates which they had hoped to build up for their families.
Thus, in the years immediately following the first stock market crash, ordinary insurance made unparalleled gains and was becoming closer and closer to offering term life insurance without exam. In 1930 the Metropolitan issued, exclusive of business revived or increased, close to $1,400,000,000 of ordinary insurance, the highest annual figure in the history of this department up to that time. But even this figure was exceeded by a considerable margin the following year, when a total of more than $1,460,000,000 was achieved. In fact, 1931 has remained the banner year for the writing of ordinary insurance in the Metropolitan.
Even in the industrial department there was an issue of $1,110,000,000 in 1930, only 8% less than in its peak year of 1929. In 1931 the industrial insurance issued still exceeded $1,000,000,000. In both the ordinary and the industrial departments, the total insurance in force continued to increase without interruption through the year 1931. Apparently, the economic situation up to that time had not yet seriously affected the ability of the American people to purchase or maintain life insurance.

We are members of the local Roger Williams Zoo and take some time to visit the zoo when we can. They have a wonderful assortment of animals to see.
Our daughter Emily’s favorite animal is the elephants, because their name begins with E.
When we first got to the elephants they were outside and sort of far away in a fenced in area. The zoo is going through some reconstruction. They’re expanding the elephant and giraffe (who live next door) exhibit spaces. They’ll have a lot more room to roam and a bigger pond to enjoy.
The zoo has an indoor pavilion. Inside we saw the giraffes, which I’ve gotten to like. The giraffes had a couple of babies this year, which we got to see on our last visit. The baby giraffes have since moved to a zoo in Chicago. The adult giraffes enjoyed the cooler space in the pavilion.
In the elephants area I couldn’t help notice one of the walls. It has paint strokes on it. Apparently they give the elephants some painting time. One way they keep them active. One sign described each elephant’s individual paint strokes. Imagine, they each painted (if you care to call it painting) in their own way. I thought that was neat. It reminded me of a site I saw in a message where an elephant learned to paint. Apparently it gives the elephants something interesting to do besides the usual routine. Interesting for sure.
Here is a link to an elephant that paints. http://www.elephantart.com/catalog/default.php?cPath=69
Later on during our visit to the zoo, we stopped by the pavilion again. The elephants were in having “lunch”. The girls loved them. One can’t help but marvel at their size. They’re the biggest land animal living on our planet.
Their trunk is amazing too. They can not only breath through it, but can spray water into their mouth or on themselves. They can use their trunk to lift heavy logs or branches. The end of the trunk has a finger like muscle. It can delicately pick up a piece of hay or grass. Just incredible really. Nature holds many wonders and the elephant is sure one of them.
I naturally got some pictures to add to my collection of photos. I’ll have to take some time to create some of my own art images of them from the photos.
I’ll showcase them here, when I get them done.

If you’re a freelance bookkeeper who is building your bookkeeping business, there are certain clients that you need to avoid to save yourself from constant stress. They are the clients who either
1) don’t pay tax bills,
2) have years worth of paperwork in boxes tax
3) who are too difficult to work with.
I’ll go into further detail on each of these types of clients and give you strategies to help deal with them.
1. The client who doesn’t pay:
You typically won’t know if a client is bad about paying their bills on time until you actually start sorting through their paperwork. If you start discovering a consistent amount of late bills, final notices and collection letters, you know you’ve got a client who doesn’t pay his bills in a timely manner. This should be a huge red flag for you. After all, you want to be sure that they’re going to pay your bill.
So what can you do to protect yourself? For all new clients you should insist upon a retainer up front before the work commences. The amount of the retainer will depend upon the amount of work that is required. Keep track of your hours.
Once you’ve used up the entire retainer, request another one and inform your client that work will not commence again until you receive another retainer. You’ll learn really quickly how good your client is at paying you and you won’t be out anything as you’ve already been paid for the work you’ve done.
2. The client with piles of paperwork in boxes:
This type of client tends to be extremely disorganized. After all, if they can’t take the time to sort out their paperwork into at least monthly files, then you know you’ve got your work cut out for you.
The question is: are you willing to tax the time to sort it all out? If you’re new and hungry for business, you may decide to take it on. However, bear in mind that huge gaps of essential information might be missing and it will literally be like putting together a jigsaw puzzle trying to get your client’s finances in order.
You will probably find yourself calling the client repeatedly to request documents. This type of bookkeeping job requires the patience of a saint. Make sure that you’ve requested a retainer before even taking this type of job on.
If you don’t think that you want to deal with this type of client, don’t be afraid to pass on the job. You might even suggest to the client that they could save money by sorting their paperwork into monthly files first.
3. The difficult client:
As surprising as it seems, there will always be clients who need a bookkeeper but are their own worst enemy. These are the clients who you have to hound for checks so their government remittances are paid on time or who don’t return your calls for additional information so that you can complete your job.
If you find yourself dealing with a difficult client who is just wasting your time, there are a couple of things you can do. You can raise your rates with this client, which will force him to either pay premium fees for being difficult or find another bookkeeper. Or you can tell him you can’t do his books anymore and explain why.
Being a bookkeeper you will encounter these types of clients during the course of your work. Being prepared so that you know how to handle them will greatly enhance your success as a freelance bookkeeper.
Did you know that there’s more to starting a bookkeeping business then just having the right software and knowledge? Can you afford to start your bookkeeping business without knowing all the facts? Take a look at my 2008 festival season handy guide to preparation for your festival, whether the sun is beaming or the skies are pouring!
Tip 1. Wellies are a must! In recent years people have opted for hiking boots, but should the weather become really wet, the mud will ride up your legs and you will be more concerned about this than the great acts on stage. If travelling by car, why not leave your wellies in the boot, that way your tent will be kept clean, if you have no car, why not seek for a cheap boot bag to store your boots in.
Tip 2. There is a myth that you need loads of toilet roll, but nowadays most festivals are handing out eco rolls at the gate, so you can benefit from more space in your bag, and save the environment.
Tip 3. Try not to take too much money, and if you need to, spread it around. Ensure you keep all your money in one place, if you do and you lose it, you lose everything and that means no BEER!
Tip 4. Be careful with your mobile and if need be, take an old mobile phone that has a spare battery, if you lose it, you can still enjoy the festival.
Tip 5. The nights are dark and the toilet visit during the night is much easier with a torch. Have one handing near the door of the tent and ensure it has new batteries ready to go.
Tip 6. Wet wipes are a godsend, they are easy to use and will be a godsend all weekend! Just ensure you seal the top after use to prevent drying out. You should also take some small freezer bags with you to ensure everything stays dry during the period the tent is up.
Tip 7. Arrive early to get a good spot, and look for the high ground to reduce the risk of flooding. Start from the bottom and peg it to the floor first so the wind should not embarrass you.
Tip 8. Water is key. You will need it for your hands, but more importantly for your teeth. Why waste time queuing? Simply use a mouthful of water and brush your teeth by the tent.
Tip 9. Sun lotion is a must, so apply as soon as you wake and at intervals throughout the day. The worst feeling is when you are burnt. Visit Superdrug and get a handy little mini tube of sun lotion, or search online for free samples. Always keep your lotion handy, you will need it during the day.
Tip 10. Finally, some people are boring and buy dull wellies, you will see these abandoned around the field when you are leaving. If you get stuck driving away from the festival, simply stick an abandoned welly under each back wheel and see the difference in grip! You see, wellies are not just for wearing!
A great store for wellies is Freds Clothing, they have a massive range of funky wellies, clothing and festival equipment including Hunter Wellies. Remember that your wellies will last you many years, so ensure you take them home with you after the festival.

Do business realize that the top gurus or business savvy people use Outsourcing to create the majority of their success? Do you really think they do all the work? No!
So what is Outsourcing?
Outsourcing is basically getting someone else to do a job or task for you to save you time and money. Most of the time, if not all the time, these people will be able to do a much better job then you could.
Here’s an example:
If you needed a graphic for a product created, and you aren’t a graphic designer or know very little, by outsourcing this task you would receive a much better quality graphic (more professional) and it would cost you less because you would first have to learn how to do it. (Just figure out how many hours it would take you to learn how and then how long it would take to do it, multiple that by how much you figure your time is worth, then compare that to what you are going to pay to outsource it.
Now when you’re just starting out, you don’t want to outsource everything. You should learn how to do it yourself or at least know what it should look like when done properly. There’s no point paying someone to do a job for you if you don’t even know if they did a good job or even did it correctly.
Some times you can get away with this, but it will take some research to find a qualified person and it will cost a lot more money.
There are many different things you can have outsourced, you can even outsource your entire business. Here are some of the things you can have outsourced:
* Ghost Writing – articles, reports, ebooks, partnership books, newsletters, copywriting
* Graphic Designer – headers, footers, ecovers, CDs, DVDs, entire websites
* Programmers – design software, installing of scripts, websites or blog setup
* Fulfillment – product duplication, packaging, delivery
* Some others include – customer service, payments and refunds, legal services, audio, video
Here are some of the services you can use:
* Guru.com
* eLance
* RentACoder
* ScriptLance
* HotScripts
The great benefit from using several of these sites is you can list your project and other people will come and bid business it (how much they are will to pay and how it will take them) NEVER, take the first bid… wait a few days or a week or so, let several people bid on your project so you can compare them.
Don’t choose someone based on the price. This can get you into trouble (waste of money and time) Make sure you check out their portfolio, their rating, or anything else that can help you make your decision. Also remember that just because you post a project, doesn’t mean you have to choose someone.
Remember you are hiring someone to do the job for you, do you think just because you apply for a job you should get it… not likely!
The best way to get started, is to sign up for an account at each of these services. Browse around a bit so you know the layout, then decide on a project to test them out. Even if you on a tight budget, I still recommend you doing this. You don’t have to spend much money, maybe $5-$20 on an article or small graphic. (I have seen several people that will do professional graphics for under $10)
When you post your project, make sure to include specific details such as if you getting an ebook created, don’t just say you want a 50-page ebook. Tell them the font size, font type, margins, line spacing, etc. I have heard of some people that have posted a project without these details and ended up getting an ebook that was about 10 pages long due to huge font sizes, big margins and double spacing each line.
Think about your project, post as much detail about the finished product without going to deep as what content it should include. Once you have found a person to do your project then you will be able to go into full detail of what your ebook should include and exactly what you want.
I hope these tips on outsourcing have helped you and will give you a different outlook on hiring other people to do the work for you, so you can spend more time on things that are more important to you and your business.
To find out more about outsourcing and how it can help you to grow your business faster and more efficiently, you should check out Jeff Mills Outsource Secrets Revealed, you’ll be able to read his free ebook called Outsource Compendium and his free.

Wages are garnished for a multitude of reasons. For people in debt, this is a serious matter because creditors take settlement direct from paychecks.
When a verdict is made, salary can then be garnished or taken directly from a person’s paycheck or other sources of income. For the following reasons, wage can be garnished:
- Child support is required.
- Taxes are in default.
- Unpaid court fines.
- Student loans in arrears.
- Credit card debt.
- Other debts.
Rules governing garnishment vary from state to state, but federal law maintains the amount at twenty-five percent of the defendant’s current income. There’s a fixed heirarchy if income is not enough to allow for all garnishments. First, federal tax garnishments are taken, then state, and lastly, credit cards. Salary garnishment isn’t allowed in states like Texas, Pennsylvania, and South and North Carolina. Few states have a lower maximum amount they allow for garnishment.
Here’s the process that the IRS follows when garnishing wage:
- The first thing served is a Notice and Demand for Payment.
- A Final Notice is served at least 30 days before the garnishment will take effect. (Note: The Final Notice is not needed to be served in person, so plenty of people don’t receive it. They may not be aware of the garnishment of their wage.)
- Unless other deals are decided for payment or dues are paid off, wage will be garnished. Garnishment of wage cannot be refused by defendants.
Companies that hire private contractors or freelancers have to file a 1099 form to the IRS to report income. Taxes are computed by the 1099 contractors themselves.
The employer has no choice but to take settlement out of the paycheck if an employee’s wages are garnished. If the employee resigns and becomes a private contractor or a 1099 freelancer, then the employer is definitely released from that obligation. The contractor’s accounts receivable can be levied by the credit, instead of garnishing wage. This means that when an independent contractor receives a check from a company for work, the bank account can be levied.
When a bank account is levied, it’s frozen, and all or some of the money in the account is taken. The IRS practices it, as well as other creditors. Creditors can levy bank accounts until the dues are paid.
Bank levies or garnishment of salary are tough matters. Seek IRS assistance from an experienced tax lawyer such as Darrin T. Mish before debt is out of control.
Darrin T. Mish is a Nationally recognized Attorney whose practice focuses on representing clients across the United States with IRS Problems. He is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbel and is a member of the American Society of IRS Problem Solvers and the Tax Freedom Institute. He has been honored by a listing in Martindale-Hubbel’s Bar Register of Preeminent Lawyers. His passion is providing IRS help to taxpayers with both individual and payroll tax problems. As a landlord, one of your prime objectives is to ensure that your tenants submit rent in good time partnership take good care of your rental properties. However, more often than not, you will find yourself embroiled in prolonged disputes with your tenants due to misuse of your rental housing units. Moreover, you will also encounter tenants who will want to be pursued every month before they submit their monthly rent arrears.
Therefore, you stand a better chance to limit or even eliminate such painstaking and time consuming experiences if you adopt preventive measures. One of the most effective ways of avoiding future disputes with your tenants involves thorough screening of prospective tenants. Indeed, thorough screening of prospective tenants is a cautionary action that aims at ensuring that you let out your rental properties only to responsible, honest and trustworthy tenants. Some of the key instruments that you can utilize to screen your prospective tenants includes use of Legal forms such as rental application forms and rental Agreement forms.
Use of rental application forms
Rental application form is a very reliable instrument that you can use to screen your future tenants. rental application forms represent some sort of interview in which applicants for rental houses reveal detailed information about themselves. You can then use the details provided by the prospective tenants in the rental application forms to investigate the validity of the information provided. Some of the main details that you may require applicants to reveal in the rental application forms include: marital status, size of the tenant’s family, current and former landlords, current occupation of the tenants, reasons for moving houses, and amount of rent payable to the current landlord.
Your rental application forms should also prompt the applicants to provide information about their income and employment status, credit history as well as information about bankruptcies and past evictions. You should also request the applicants to validate their information by appending relevant referees and the contact details of the referees. In fact, you will find credit reports to be very convenient in ascertaining the abilities of your respective tenants to pay rent because they provide candid histories of individual concerning punctuality in paying rent and other bills as well as past bankruptcies and evictions. This approach of digging out current and historical information about applicants will facilitate your desire to house responsible and cooperative tenants.
Signing of rental agreements
Once you approve the rental application request of a future tenant, the next important step that you must undertake is signing of a rental agreement that clearly spells out to the tenant the terms and conditions for renting your property. The Rental Agreement should be signed before the tenant occupies your rental property. Signing of Rental Agreement is a legal way of committing your prospective tenants to comply with your prescribed conditions for renting your property, failure of which they risk legal action being taken against them. Some of the key details that should be contained in a Rental Agreement include:
• Total rent payable per month;
• Security deposit payable before a tenant occupies your house;
• Terms and conditions for refunding security deposit when the tenant vacates the property;
• Clear statement as to who will be responsible for paying different bills such as electricity and water bill;
• Terms and conditions for using additional facilities such as car park
• Visiting hours
• Clear statement as to who will be responsible for different types of repairs and maintenance of the house.
It is always important to remember that all your actions as a landlord are limited within the stipulated state laws of your respective state. You must endeavor to avoid contravening state specific laws due to the fact that different states in the business have different laws that govern landlord-tenant relationships. You can avoid contravening state laws by employing the use of Landlord forms or real estate forms that have been designed by experts. partnership are some sites which offer Free rental application forms online.

Abortion is dalai lama Dalai Lama crime in Jamaica. The 1864 Offenses Against Persons Act renders steep penalties for obtaining or attending an abortion. In Jamaica, abortions are only legal in order to save the life of the mother, or to preserve her physical and/or mental health. According to the 1864 Act, abortions are not legal in cases of rape, incest, impairment of the fetus, and especially not simply because the pregnancy is unplanned, unwanted, or inconvenient, however, common law will allow abortion in cases of rape, incest and fetal abnormality even though both the woman and the abortion practitioner can be jailed for the abortion itself. The law on the books and the common application of the law are extremely contradictory. Anyone found guilty of self-inducing an abortion, or assisting someone in getting an abortion may be subject to life in prison. Even with penalties this steep, Jamaican women are risking imprisonment and sometimes even death in order to end an unwanted pregnancy.
The Medical Association of Jamaica reports that, in 2004, the third leading cause of maternal death was abortion and, that, despite the current laws against abortion, it was committed to making sure that all women, who chose to do so, had Dalai Lama to safe and properly performed abortions. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than 19 million illegal abortions are performed around the world each year and that those abortions are often performed under conditions that are not sterile and are performed by unlicensed practitioners.
Teen pregnancy rates are at an all time high in Jamaica and, even though teenage girls have been offered the option of the abortion pill, they still continue to seek illegal abortions. By the age of 19, a full 45 percent of Jamaican women have been pregnant. As an added complication, the rate of HIV and AIDS is on the rise in Jamaica due to the number of young women resorting to prostitution in order to pay for an abortion. Women’s groups are currently discussing their own positions on abortion. Most are pro-choice, but others seem reluctant to go public with a firm stance.
In the United States, Roe vs. Wade decided the abortion issue in legal terms. This is not to say that abortion does not remain a heated debate in this country and many others. Ultimately, Jamaica will have to pass a firm law that defines abortion and the access to abortion services for that country’s women. Either way that decision goes will elicit debate and possible violence.
