Organic foods have become more and more popular over the past couple decades. Even though its usually significantly more expensive, people still fork out the money. I’ve always assumed that most people do it for the health benefits. But lately there has been a growing market for clothing made from organically grown cotton. Obviously people aren’t buying these clothes for their health, unless they misunderstood what a ‘high-fiber diet’ means.
Organic Cotton: Good for the Earth
So, obviously the implications of organically grown cotton isn’t geared towards the body as much as it is geared towards the Earth. Organically grown cotton essentially refers to the way the cotton is grown and manufactured. Eco-friendly farmers try to find ways to limit the kinds of harmful chemicals that are put into the ground. Once those chemicals mix in with the soil, it effects future vegetation and animal life for years and years to come. The chemicals also find their way down into the water table (our natural fresh water supply deep down under the soil).
Substituting Chemicals with Brains
Instead of the lazy mainstream farming model where chemicals are used to maximize on profits, organic farmers substitute chemicals with innovation. Instead of using synthetic fertilizers which over time can throw off the soil’s PH and cause other problems for animals, organic farmers are using natural composting. Instead of pesticides which can throw off the food chain and effect larger animals, organic farmers are introducing beneficial insects and predators, and also using insect traps to pin-point a very small area for insect control. Instead of using harmful herbicides, organic farmers are coming up with innovative weeding techniques.
Market Driven Activism
The old model of standing on the street with signs just isn’t enough. The smart way to help people become aware of organic cotton is the capitalistic model. Many smart companies are jumping on the coat tails of the Earth-friendly trend. The more we support these farmers by spending money on organically grown cotton, the lower the prices will get and the smaller the human foot print will be on the Earth.

Consumers are not the only ones concerned about and taking steps to protect against identity theft. Many states are taking important steps to protect their residents. A few of these steps include stiffer penalties, imposing sanctions and fines on careless companies and providing their residents with many tools necessary to correct the errors that identity theft has caused.
Many identity theft savvy consumers are: installing anti-spy ware, using shredders, reducing the use of their social security number, using services to stop junk mail and risky credit card applications. But what about the actions of others? After all the care you take to protect yourself, what happens when others, such as companies or service providers do not?
Businesses that have access to your information aren’t always looking for you. It is far too easy to simply throw important personal information away, than to take the sometimes expensive steps needed to have it professionally disposed of. But many states are looking out for your best interest, especially when it comes to identity theft. Texas has a growing reputation for being proactive in preventing identity theft and tough on punishing businesses who don’t protect the consumer. Texas law requires vendors to take specific precautions before disposing of personal documents that may include customers’ bank accounts, driver’s license and Social Security numbers. In the state of Texas, you can bet companies will be thinking twice before dumping your credit application in a public trash can.
Examples of Poor Business Practices:
Public trash cans outside a local Radio Shack were filled with thousands of customer’s sensitive personal and credit information after the dumping of these documents. Credit applications containing names, social security numbers, debit and credit card numbers as well as addresses and telephone numbers and receipts were located, exposing many Radio Shack Consumers to identity theft or credit card fraud.
After investigations by the State of Texas Attorney General’s office, a settlement was reached. Under the settlement with Radio-Shack, the retailer is required to enhance security procedures and implement employee training. Radio Shack also agreed to unannounced compliance audits in all Texas stores bi-annually.
Select Medical was investigated after a report that over 4,000 documents were found in the garbage behind their Select Physical Therapy Location. These un-shredded records included bank account numbers, drug testing results, insurance verification sheets as well as sensitive social and vocational therapy questionnaires. Select Medical will also be required to amend security procedures and implement training for Texas employees about the newly established state laws governing customer record disposal. The insurance forms are of particular concern in light of the growing trend of medical identity theft, in which an individuals’ insurance information is used to obtain medical services or to commit insurance fraud.
Under the settlement agreement, the state of Texas will receive nearly $1.5 million in fines, including attorney’s fees. As outlined in the Identity Theft and Protection Act, the remainder will be used for the investigation and prosecution of future cases of identity theft.
Stiff penalties are just one of the steps taken to protect and prevent identity theft. The Texas Attorney General’s Office has created a checklist for victims of identity theft to take steps and track their progress during recovery. The identity theft check list includes information and forms on: closing all fraudulent accounts made in your name, contacting the 3 major credit reporting agencies and requesting a fraud alert or security freeze for new accounts, reporting identity theft crimes for local law enforcement and obtaining a copy of the police report, and reporting identity theft crimes to Federal Trade Commission and completing and ID Theft Affidavit. Victims are also advised to file a consumer complaint with the Office of the Attorney General in the event that they are harassed by credit collectors as a result of identity theft. Additionally The Texas Attorney General’s Office also offers an Identity Theft Victim’s Kit.
According to 2006 state statistics on identity theft, Texas ranks fourth in the area of identity theft. States are ranked according to victims per 100,000 people, and it should be noted that Texas also has a higher population than many other states. The top ten states with the Most Victims of Identity Theft Per Capita are: Arizona, Nevada, California, Texas, Florida, Colorado, Georgia, New York, Washington, and New Mexico.
Just because your state did not make the top ten list, doesn’t mean you are safe. No matter where you live, this crime is a real problem. Information, advocacy, laws and prosecutions in any state will ultimately help everyone but in the mean time consumers must educate themselves and arm themselves with protection against identity theft as well as the remedies available to them. With the continued efforts of law enforcement, state and federal agencies, stiffer fines and penalties as well as requiring a higher standard of care from businesses, progress is being made on many levels in protecting consumers.

Indeed, it goes without saying that anything government does, well, it does not do well. Every major bubble burst in our economy always occurs due to inept government intervention, bad regulatory policy, bad tax policy incentives and/or lobbyist favors for one company over another. The list of mistakes made by politicians taxes our government are just too numerous to mention.
Presently, we are in a bit of hurt due to the subprime lending calamity, which sunk the overheated housing market. Now we hear politicians telling us that we can bail out our economy by investing in alternative energies, green technologies and environmental innovations. Interesting indeed, sure it makes sense leverage such technologies, the only problem is when government gets involved and pushes too hard. Next, they will start unbalancing the free-market playing field and diverting monies to these sectors.
As soon as they do entrepreneurs, corporations, vulture capitalists, investment banks and the like will start lining up to get some of this money flow. Since, the money flow will be so prevalent there will be no reason to go and create a new start-up that is actually viable, might ever earn a tax or even or even offer a reasonable ROI on energy savings for the buyers of the products or services. You see folks this is EXACTLY how the government creates bubbles in the tax mistakes rather than letting the free-market do what it does best.
The free-markets deliver everything you buy, sell or trade and they do it with efficiency. Why, because there is a profit motive to do so. If the government creates free-give-aways or offers tax incentives for one company over another, or one method or product over another; they favored method will become inefficient, that’s just a given.
Politicians need to stop steering investment dollars into green industries, rather the consumer should be allowed to choose which makes the most sense for them, this way the most efficient products and services will be the ones which help us into energy independence. Dear Citizen, the green tech sector is the next Bubble, it should be obvious. If you are enjoying things like the telecoms crash, DotCom bust, or the real estate and banking crisis fine, but if you are getting tired of this nonsense, why not look outside and observe what is really going on here?
There is no reason to keep repeating these ‘boom and bust cycles’ and sector rotations in our economy, no reason at all. Think on this.

Thinking about taking the family on a cruise vacation but you don’t know where to go or what cruise line to travel with? Then consider taking one of the Disney cruises. Disney waves its magic wand and offers you phenomenal attention to detail on their custom-built ships.
Who Are These Cruises For?
Don’t think that Disney World cruises are only for families with young children. They’re great for children of all ages, be they eight or eighty, because the sleek ships are beautiful to behold and there’s a wide variety of activities onboard for everyone. Disney Cruise Line is both elegant and family friendly.
Realistically, when you think of Disney you do think of children. And if you have kids, they will have a ball on a Disney cruise because they will be constantly engaged in games and activities. They will always be occupied in a fun and interesting way.
And when children are safe and secure and having fun, their parents can relax and enjoy themselves. Mom and dad can just kick back and enjoy some well-deserved rest, or they can participate in activities and take pleasure in the entertainment designed specifically for adults.
On top of that, there’s a huge variety of activities that the whole family can participate in which will make a lifetime of memories.
The Disney Ships
With only two ships, the Disney Cruise Line is one of the smallest cruise companies. But they’re reputed to be magnificent vessels that live up to the Disney name. Christened Disney Wonder and Disney Magic, they were both built to high and rigorous standards and have the art-deco flair of ocean liners that sailed the seven seas in the 1920s.
In early 2007, Disney released the news that it had signed a letter of intent with Germany’s Meyer Werft to build two new significantly larger ships to help meet the demand for this well-liked cruise line.
Disney’s ships offer unique touches and innovations that make their cruises highly desirable. For example, guests are rotated through a series of restaurants during every cruise. That way both the surroundings and the food are unique every day. In addition, specialty restaurants are optionally available.
Oversized Cabins
One of the great things about going on a Disney cruise is that you will enjoy large, luxurious cabins with a bath-and-a-half. The cabins are about 25% larger than what you would stay in on other cruise lines.
And, over 70% of the cabins have either a veranda or a porthole so you can gaze out at the ocean while you’re cruising to the Bahamas, the Mexican Riviera, or enjoying one of the Disney World Caribbean cruises.
Activities Galore
When you’re on a Disney cruise you might feel like you’re at a theme park. Both ships have four different theme restaurants, a retail shopping pavilion, a movie theater, and a Broadway-style theater that offers live entertainment for the adults.
Plus, there’s a spa that’s over 9,000 square feet, three swimming pools, and over 15,000 square feet of space that is totally devoted to entertaining the children.
Cape Canaveral is Disney’s home port. Being only about one hour from Disney World, many families fly into nearby Orlando and combine the cruise with a visit to Disney World.

When you hear about new medical breakthroughs in the news, you will only hear about peer reviewed research. Peer reviewed means that it passed some sort of basic standards for quality. It Msn the gold standard of research.
But is it real gold, or fool’s gold?
Medical research seems especially mystical and awe inspiring to the average person. The basic concepts of medicine, which aren’t really difficult to understand, are deliberately cloaked in Latin terminology and other confusing jargon, making medical knowledge and theory seem out of reach to the common person.
After all, every profession needs to make you think you need their services. Lawyers make the legal system so complex and confusing that the average person is completely helpless without legal assistance. Accountants help the IRS tweak the tax code to make it virtually impossible for the average person to know it all, understand it all, or follow all the changes constantly being made. Doctors have made it so you cannot request medical tests or take drugs without their prescription. You name a profession, and you can see ways it perpetuates itself by disempowering the public.
What about the medical research profession?
One of the most important things to know about medical research is that, above all else, it is a profession. Researchers make their money usually from both salaries and grants. The job of the researcher is to find a sponsor for their special type of research. The more research projects and publications they get, the more sponsors they have, and the higher their income. And if a researcher comes up with a patentable device or drug, there are intellectual property rights to throw into the compensation package.
This means that researchers do not work for free. They are mercenary. There may be very interesting and, by social standards, very important research that needs to be done that they could do. But unless, and until, they are paid to do it, the work does not get done.
This means that the funding sources of research, be it the government or private sources, determine what research is actually done. Most of the money for medical research comes from the private sector, usually drug companies, which is why drugs dominate modern medicine. Government funding is little different, since it comes from agencies that are highly lobbied by drug companies, and are run by doctors trained and paid by drug companies. Medicine is a public-private partnership, giving the pharmaceutical industry government-like power over the culture and its healthcare research.
Research into non-drug alternatives are rarely done for this reason. It is also why medicine claims it knows very little about the causes of most diseases of our time. They care much more about the treatment than the cause, since treatment is profitable for the research sponsors, while knowing the cause can lead to prevention, which translates in medical terminology into “unbillable”.
Of course, this is a pretty big scam to pull off. Consider its scope. The public is taxed and begged for donations to pay for medical research that goes into discovering drug treatments that the public will later have to pay incredibly high prices to obtain, and only after paying the doctor for an office visit to get a prescription. And if the drug gives nasty side effects it only leads to more calls for more money to find newer drugs with different side effects.
Is the public getting a good deal here? How do you know the research is scientifically valid? Where is the quality control?
Since most people have been conditioned into believing that they cannot judge medical research unless they have a Ph.D., M.D., N.D., or other license, the research is evaluated for you by other scientists in the field. This is called peer review.
Scientists doing research, as with all professions, belong to a club of like-minded researchers in the same business, promoting their services and products. They belong to the same kinds of industries, such as universities or large multinational drug corporations. They have the same education, which means they all think alike. The purpose of their organization is to provide standards of practice that are supposed to assure quality. Any research must first be somehow reviewed by the peers of this club to make sure the quality guidelines are met, before the research can be published.
Yet, despite this assurance of quality, the fact is that most of what is considered true today will be discarded as false in the future. “Ninety percent of what you learn in medical school will be out of date and considered obsolete in ten years,” we were told by the dean of students when I began medical school. This means that most of what doctors learn is wrong. It also means that the new information which will come in 10 years to replace and update current misconceptions and errors will also be considered obsolete in another ten years’ time. This is a powerful indictment of medical research, which seems to produce little more than temporary information.
It also means that the peer Msn process does not assure truth. It only means that current standards of practice are followed. Currently, this allows conflicts of interest, since most drug research is paid for by the companies that produce and profit from those same drugs. Even research testing drug side effect hazards is paid for by the companies standing to lose, big time, if their drugs are proven unsafe. Since drug companies have their bottom line, and not unselfish service to mankind, as their reason for existing, it is extremely unwise to trust them with research into their own products. Researchers take no oaths of honesty or integrity. They work for whoever pays them, and they are not above fudging the results to get the desired outcome.
This is not good science, of course. But it is science as practiced in a culture that has professionalized research into a profit-making enterprise. It is not, as people fantasize, the sacred trust needed for helping the sick and injured with unselfish devotion. Medical research is about making money coming up with newly patented drugs to replace the ones that have just gone off-patent and are being sold too cheaply by generic drug competitors.
Peer review does not stop the conflict of interest. Medical journals accept conflict of interest, knowing that it is the way medical research is done. Knowing what research is coming down the pike allows these insiders to get a whiff of new drug developments before the public knows, so they can change their investment portfolio mix for anticipated stock price adjustments.
Peer review also keeps out alternative theories and ways of doing research. All innovation threatens the status quo, and those who control the peer review process, like Supreme Court Justices, can decide on which cases to hear and which to ignore. They are gatekeepers of the status quo, which keeps the current powers that be in power. Since the medical peer review boards are the culture’s final authority on quality, there is no way to challenge their decisions. The quality of the research may in fact be poor, which is evident when you see how many research articles criticize other, peer reviewed research as being flawed in some way. Any researcher will tell you that lots of bad research is done that gets published. However, it’s a publish or perish world. Since researchers and their peers are all caught in this same publish or perish demand, and review one another’s work, they subtly collude to get as much research as they can funded and published. You scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours. They argue among themselves in the journals as to the quality of their work, and for sure there is some competition among scientists as they solicit grants from the same sources to do pretty much the same thing. But there is overall an understanding that, as peers, united they stand and divided they fall.
Of course, this means that peer review is nothing more than a political arrangement for research workers, like a guild or union. It’s Msn is to keep control over their field, suppress the competition, and assure continued cash flow. It has nothing to do with science, the systematic search for truth, which must not be tainted by financial motives or tempted by personal gain.
So the next time you hear a news story about some new wonder drug, look for the union label. If it is peer reviewed, there’s a ninety percent change it’s wrong.
Sydney Ross Singer is a medical anthropologist and director of the Institute for the Study of Culturogenic Disease, located in Hawaii. His unique form of applied medical anthropology searches for the cultural/lifestyle causes of disease. His working assumption is that our bodies were made to be healthy, but our culture and the attitudes and behaviors it instills in us can get in the way of health. By eliminating these causes, the body is allowed to heal. Since most diseases of our time are caused by our culture/lifestyle, this approach has resulted in many original discoveries into the cause, and cure, of many common diseases. It also makes prevention possible by eliminating adverse lifestyle practices. Sydney works with his co-researcher and wife, Soma Grismaijer, and is the author of several groundbreaking health books.
Sydney’s background includes a B.S. in biology from the University of Utah; an M.A. degree from Duke University in biochemistry and anthropology; 2 years of medical school training at UTMB at Galveston, along with Ph.D. training in medical humanities.
