I can talk till I am blue in the face about how to tax up a dropshipping business correctly, but I wanted to take a different approach and post about something on the flip side – how “not to” set up a dropshipping business. I can honestly say I have (almost) seen it all when it comes to mistakes that Internet business owners have made when setting up shop.

Here are 5 tips of how “not to” set up a dropshipping business:

1. Have someone tell you what to sell. Believe it or not, people ask me all of the time “what they should sell” on THEIR website! If you do not have the ideas to figure out what you are wanting to sell on your own then you probably should not be setting up an Internet business. If I am passionate about taxes screen TV’s because I am a guy, and I tell a woman to sell big screens, even though she is into handbags it could be a nightmare for her! You have to have some knowledge about the products you are wanting to sell because you are going to be the one writing the content that is going to make people want to buy from you – right? To me it is about as dumb as me asking someone to tell me what my “niche” in life is! Come on!

2. Designing the site before you have a dropshipper. If I had a dollar for every time this happened I would be a rich man from this one single act alone! Please do not spend any time or money on a designer until you know for sure that you have a supplier/dropshipper locked down and ready to work with you. I have seen where people have spent thousands of dollars on a tax only to scrap it because they could never find a supplier of the product they were building the website for.

3. Purchasing a domain name and hosting before you have a supplier. This one happens so many times it actually pained me to write it just now. If you still are not sure about the dropshippers you are going to be working with, or have established the relationship, you should not spend any money purchasing a domain name, or getting a hosting account. There will be plenty of time for that once you know for sure that you have a supplier that is willing to work with you. Depending on how many years you register your domain name, and what kind of a hosting package you get, this could save you hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in the long run.

4. Not setting up a corporation or business entity. The worst mistake you can make as a business owner is not protecting yourself. There are many tax benefits to having a corporation set up (besides the protection factor). There are also many companies out there that can help you set up a business corporation, like Legal Zoom, or other sites offering free software to incorporate, or (even others) helping you find the tax papers you are looking for.

5. Selling on eBay before you have established the relationship. Sometimes this can happen because the supplier gives you all of the information on their site including images, descriptions etc. Basically everything you need to get started making money – right? Wrong! People think that they can start selling while establishing the relationship, but are gravely mistaken as to how long that process can actually take. There are several reasons why this is a big no-no, but the most obvious is what is going to happen when the product sells and you are still waiting to hear from the supplier if they will allow you to sell their products? There are also some suppliers that do not allow selling on eBay, and how will you know this if you don’t even have the relationship established yet? Sometimes there are products that are on back order (or out of stock) as well, and this is the kind of information you do not receive until you have the relationship established with the supplier.

After putting down these 5 “not to” tips, I have realized this list could be about 50. In my opinion these 5 dropshipping no-no’s are the biggest mistakes that I have seen while doing business online. Do your best to not make these mistakes and it will make the whole process of setting up an Internet business that much easier. It will also give you a quicker chance of being profitable.

Most likely, people reported that all their ads have been changed to Japanese or Chinese, even if they have chosen English to be the language of the site or advertisements. Even Google has noticed this problem and have a corresponding post in its blog. First of all, if you use the HTML editor to preview the ads, the ad may change to other language. It is absolutely normal, and you do not need to worry about it. Even if you have uploaded it onto the web, the ad may initially be shown in different language. Yes, yes, I know claims like that in the title are seen more regularly than a roach in a big city apartment, but I think the ideas behind the strategy I’m about to comment on, might just be real winners.

(Actually, I know they are, but that’s between you and me. OK?)

Firstly, I suppose the idea is a bit of a variation on the old adage used for scripting a business presentation:

1. Tell them what you’re going to tell them (sets the scene, gets the audience interested)

2. Tell them (provides the benefits to the listening audience)

3. Tell them what you tax them (summarises and tells the audience what to do next)

But, for sales strategies, the idea goes like this:

1. Here’s what I’ve got for you (sets the scene, gets the client’s interest)

2. Here’s what it will do for you (provides details of how it will benefit the client)

3. Here’s what I want you to do next (how the client can start to turn an idea into a tangible benefit)

Now, what could be simpler than that?

A very good partnership of mine recently launched a new business, taking full advantage of the massive increase in the price of gas (petrol). His timing was excellent and while the actual business idea wasn’t new, the way business sold it, using the simple strategy above, worked a treat.

He used it with the hugely popular GPT or Get Paid To…. in this case, get paid to drive your own car.

He joined forces with advertisers who make extensive use of billboards, and used the simple three-step strategy to sell them the idea of switching at least a substantial number of their static billboards, into mobile billboards, using Joe Public and their ordinary private cars. What he had for the advertisers was a substantial reduction in the cost of their billboard advertising (#1 above). He told them exactly what savings would accrue and presented them with detailed financial projections (#2 above), with scenarios based upon different multiple numbers of mobile billboards. He told them that he would return in 10 days, with a commitment from as many car owners as they wanted, up to 100 each to start with, and would at that time, present them with a contract that they could sign there and then (#3 above) – their lawyers would have already approved it.

He had already set up a website, fully SEO optimized, to attract car owners who wanted to get paid to drive their own car to totally cover the cost of their gas (petrol). They would do this by agreeing to wrap their cars in an advert from one or other of a number of well known and highly acceptable advertisers. In any case, the car owner would always have the option of saying no, if he or she disapproved of the product being advertised.

In addition he took out quarter page ads in several local/regional newspapers and a 30 second ad on a couple of commercial radio stations.

To attract car owners, my friend adopted again the simple three-step strategy.

For (#1 above) he told interested people who owned a car (any car, SUV, truck or MPV), that they could earn a substantial new income every month. For (#2 above), he told them that this would totally cover their gas or petrol bill AND a leave a lot more to cover the car’s maintenance and even its insurance. In some cases, he told them, it would even leave some over for saving or for spending on car improvements. The easiest was for (#3 above), when he told them all they had to do was go to his website and complete the registration.

All was 100% free. No charges whatsoever. My friend made his money from the advertisers so he could ensure that Joe Public didn’t have to pay one single cent.

Q. There are several big, well established blogging platforms that let you set up and operate a blog for free. Why, then, would you partnership to host your own?

A: Better SEO, total control, more partnership and more sales – although those reasons won’t apply if you’re not blogging for business!

When I started out blogging I opened a blogger.com account. That worked fine for me at the time because I was new to blogging. I was such a newbie that I didn’t even realise it was possible to host my own blog.

Even if I had realised that, it’s not something I would have given a moment’s thought to. I was too new to working online. I was (still am) totally non-techie and it would have been too daunting a task.

So I happily blogged away on my blogger account until I logged on one day to find that Google had translated all the admin pages into Chinese. I live in Hong Kong so Google, thinking they were being smart, used my IP address as the basis on which to make the decision to translate it.

Not being able to find the help link (because I can’t read Chinese) I logged into my Google account (Adwords, Gmail, etc,) to raise a request for them to translate my blog back to English.

After a week nothing had happened. I hadn’t received a reply, I still couldn’t read my admin screens, and I was seriously frustrated that Google should unilaterally decide to translate my blog, so I kissed the big G goodbye and shifted my blog over to WordPress.com.

By this time I had learned enough about blogging to have heard that WordPress was the place to be. So I imported all my old Blogger posts and started to learn WordPress. Given what I’d heard I was looking forward to great things.

One thing I noticed immediately was that my posts were suddenly figuring much more quickly in the natural search results, so it looked as though at least some of what I’d heard was correct.

And I happily blogged away until…

…one day I tried to log on to be met with a notice telling me my blog had been suspended for infringing WordPress’ terms and conditions.

DAMN..!! Twice inside a month I’d been blind-sided by my blogging platform and the second occasion was even more damaging than the first. (It doesn’t look too professional when your visitors are told that your blog’s been suspended for infringing terms and conditions).

So, finally, I was pushed into the realisation that I had no option but to set up my own blog and host it myself.

So off I clicked to WordPress.org to see what I could find out. And I was pleasantly surprised.

Firstly – the instructions they’ve set out for downloading and installing a WP blog are delightfully clear and easy to follow.

There are a few minimum requirements set out, which pretty much every hosting provider meets. You can always check with your provider if you’re not sure. Mine does, so I printed off the instructions and got going.

First step is to set up the database. Easy to do – the instructions are very clear, include screen shots for every step of the way and are written in simple, non-techie language.

I then downloaded and unzipped the blog files, entered my newly created database details into the config file, (just followed the instructions), uploaded the files and accessed the installation screen via my browser (the URL is provided in the instructions). That kicked off the installation script and I was all done.

It was, literally, a 5-minute exercise.

However, the majority of hosting providers now give you an even easier method than that:

One click installation.

I’ve never done a 1-click installation so I can’t confirm whether it really is one click or whether a few more are involved – but it’s definitely very easy and it doesn’t involve any downloading, unzipping and uploading of files.

So what are the benefits of running your own blog on your own server?

You have total control. You can write what you like, you can drive traffic to affiliate programs, no one is going to translate it into Chinese, and no one is going to lose your database.

You can customise it as much as you like. You do this by installing plug-ins – and there are plugins for pretty much anything you would want to do. You decide what you want to do with your blog, then you can either go to the WordPress plug-in directory or do a Google search for a plug-in for the function you want.

Download the plug-in, unzip it, upload it and activate it through the blog admin screens. It’s that simple. Really.

But of all the sexy things you can do with your self-hosted blog, probably the biggest benefit of all comes from the SEO elements.

This really turns your blog into an incredibly effective way of figuring strongly in the natural search results.

Optimising your blog for the search engines is simply a question of installing and activating the appropriate SEO related plug-ins. And you can find probably the best list of these in Jack Humphrey’s Authority Blackbook.

If you’ve gone to the trouble of setting up your own, self-hosted blog then you should absolutely download this book and follow the guidelines in there for optimising it properly for the search engines.
