Trading with Contracts for Difference

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

Known as equity swaps in the institutional market, they originated in the UK in the 1980s. Contracts for Difference (CFDs) are an agreement between the investor and the CFD provider to settle the difference in cash between the price at which the CFD trade position is opened and the price it’s closed.

On The Positive side

A CFD will mirror the performance of a stock without owning them, and the profit/loss is determined by the difference between the buy and the sell price. Because contracts for difference trade on margin, investors only need a small proportion of the total value of a position to trade.

A CFD will also mirror any corporate actions that take place. The owner of a share CFD will receive cash dividends and participate in stock splits. Traders use CFDs as they allow them to leverage into “stocks” for little upfront cost. Moreover, in a falling market, you can sell the CFD you don’t own and buy back when it has slipped in price value enough for you to pocket the difference and make a profit.

On The Downside

There are some significant disadvantages to trading CFDs, many of which are based around the fact that they are an OTC (over the counter) derivative. That means that the CFD provider, not a Securities Exchange, is the counterparty to your contract and it is their terms and conditions, designed to benefit them, that you agree to. The downside to CFDs include;

  • The deposit is not a down payment for the balance of the CFD trade, but rather a margin held by the provider as protection against any possible losses. This means that an investor may receive a margin call demanding more money if they have bought into the stock thinking it was heading up and the share price falls.
  • Given this, we suggest the use of a stop loss that is activated by the CFD Provider (broker) at a % move in the underlying share price against the trade. You would adjust this according to your individual leverage scenario. This should quash any margin call demands.
  • You are liable to pay interest on the total transaction amount, regardless of the amount of margin that you have contributed.
  • As an OTC (over the counter) derivative you are not offered the same protection as when you purchase shares. For example, some CFD providers are not obliged to use the stop losses you specify, they may also ‘bundle’ together orders from other traders and give you an average price.

Why Contracts for Difference

Leverage.

The leverage level offered by the CFD provider magnifies the underlying movement of the stock. Most providers set differing leverage levels and you can find the best level that suits you trading style. By using a Guaranteed stop Loss (GSL) it is possible to effectively increase leverage levels by capping the margin requirement held against you.

Control of Risk.

If you have ever traded, you know how important it is to use stop losses for capital preservation, especially when using a leveraged product.

  • CFDs allow you to cut your losses quickly and leave your profits to run. This ability to quickly exit at the prevailing market price allows for greater risk control.
  • CFDs reflect the price of the underlying equity, therefore, you will always know what the market price is of your shares and know what you can sell out for, provided you choose a CFD Provider who uses “at market” prices. Some CFD providers (market makers) may only give spreads, which have the potential to force you in at higher prices and out and lower prices.
  • Placing automated Stop Loss orders can exit you out of suggestions that go against you while you are busy in your day-to-day activities.

Other things you may want to consider about CFDs

Hedging

Another application of CFDs, as an alternative to using Exchange Traded Options (ETO’s), is to use CFDs to hedge positions in your equity portfolio.

As with all hedging there is a cost. i.e. the commission you pay to open the CFD position, however, you will receive a net interest payment from the CFD provider as you are shorting the stock. Additionally, there is the indirect cost of depositing a margin payment with your provider to cover the CFD.

The Big Swap – What Are You Thinking?

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

Have home prices become so low that consumers have lost their minds? My recent experiences have led me to believe that there may be a lot less logic out there in the real estate market than I once believed.

A new home buyer recently explained to me how he had moved at just the right time to escape the upcoming Michigan freeze and take advantage of our 70 degree winter months in Nevada. He also explained to me that he had taken advantage of a very big home price discount given by a lady who needed to move back to Chicago. He had enough money from his IRA to not need a mortgage, but he did take a small seller carry-back loan. What a deal I thought, it must be nice to have such great timing to be able to benefit from the depressed market and low housing prices.

The conversation with the new home buyer became much more interesting when he told me how he did it. Without hesitation he told me that he abandoned his home, after the printing company that he worked for closed its doors, then he packed up the moving van and pointed his car southwest. That was it, and there was not a tinge of regret or concern in his voice when he said it.

I was stunned by the simplicity of the act, but I couldn’t help but ask, why wasn’t he concerned about the consequences of leaving his home in Michigan for bank foreclosure? “Why worry” he explained, they won’t make the effort to chase me across the country. In his mind, it was just one more foreclose in a sea of foreclosures, and there was nothing to be concerned about.

While I’m not an “establishment” kind of guy, there seems to me to be a serious flaw in the belief that you can dump your current home and its mortgage because now is the right time to buy, or because you simply don’t have the patience to wait for the economy to change. While I’m not in touch with the long-term consequences of abandonment, foreclosure and deficiency judgments, it’s hard to believe that you can continue your life without consequences after making a decision of this type.

Take a suggestion from a person who has dealt with bill collectors in the past, you don’t want to live with someone chasing you on a daily basis for tens of thousands of dollars, especially if you have purchased a “new” home in another state and have wages that can be attached. It is likely that they will come after your assets. While a lot of people would like to move, for various reasons, most have bitten the proverbial bullet and are waiting for times to change.

How to Buy Property in Spain – 10 Tips to Avoid Disappointment

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

How to buy property in Spain has been a popular question for UK buyers for some decades. Now US investors are catching on. Spain has a magnetism that is hard to explain and that few other countries possess. It’s not only the spectacular scenery, fantastic beaches and year-round sunshine. It seems to be something about the easy, relaxed pace of life and the exuberance and happiness of its people, that draws people back year after year and makes them reluctant to leave. Plus, of course, it has the lowest cost of living in Europe!

But of course it’s exactly this magical quality that you need to beware of when it comes to buying property! It’s fatally easy to fall in love with a house that’s bathed in sunshine, with a sensational view, and let all common sense fly out of the window – as thousands of British buyers have discovered to their cost. Stranded with no property and no money, many are wishing they had never heard of Spain.

So if you are serious, you need to understand how to buy property in Spain in a way that will enhance your lifestyle, and won’t leave you out of pocket. Here are ten suggestions to point you in the right direction.

  1. Once you have chosen an area, book into an hotel for some days and explore. Ideally, do this at the least attractive time of year weatherwise. Pretend you are a journalist and try to find as many downsides as you can. If it’s in a resort area, would you fancy it when most vacationers have gone home? If it’s in a rural location, would you feel cut off in the winter months? If one of its attractions is that it’s near an airport, how would you feel if your airline stopped flying to that airport? (This does happen and makes a huge difference to the property’s usefulness as a vacation home.)
  2. This one’s a biggie. Hire an attorney whom you can really trust and who really understands all aspects of Spanish real estate law, including planning/zoning laws. Your consulate may be able to provide you a list of recommended attorneys. Do you know how many people have been left bankrupt, with their dreams in shreds, because they didn’t check planning regulations? Either they didn’t check that they had full title to the land, or they failed to ensure that the property they were buying was legally built on that land. If this happens, the authorities will simply demolish the property, leaving you with nothing. And this has happened to plenty of people.
  3. Remember also that in parts of Spain, even if the property is legally built on the land, the authorities can take back the land if they decide they want it for municipal development. And there is nothing you can do about it. This is known by English speakers as the “land-grab” and has happened, for instance, in areas of Valencia including the Costa Blanca. Although this was declared illegal under European law, many foreign property owners are still threatened with loss of their property. So do take very clear and thorough legal advice before proceeding.
  4. Before you start your search for a property, write down your budget and keep looking at it. In the Spanish sunshine, after a few glasses of Rioja, it is easy to be seduced by a gorgeous property that you really can’t afford. Be clear about your budget and stick to it.
  5. When you have started in earnest on your property search, view the properties as often as you wish. If any owner wants to restrict you to a single viewing, walk away. Be careful to check such details as telephone connections, and broadband if this is important to you. After your initial viewing, plenty of questions will occur to you so write them down before next time. Try to visit in different weather conditions and at different times of day.
  6. For financing, the easiest way to raise a mortgage is often by going to a Spanish bank. You can usually get up to 80 percent of the purchase price that way. Alternatively, you may prefer to re-finance your existing property.
  7. Don’t forget that in Spain there are initial charges that have to be paid up front. These include transfer tax, stamp duty, fees to the notary public, and name changes to the deed. You should allow about 10 percent of the purchase price to cover these.
  8. When you have finally got to the point of purchasing your property, the first thing you do is sign a “reservation” agreement. This means the vendor has to withdraw the property from the market. Once the lawyer’s search is complete, you and the vendor sign the “sale and purchase” contract. This is legally binding and all the details of the property have to be correctly entered.
  9. On completion day, you and the vendor, both with your lawyers, attend the office of the notary public to sign the final contracts. The process is now complete.
  10. Relax with a glass of wine (or three) and enjoy your new property!

These tips about how to buy a property in Spain should ensure that the process goes smoothly – and that you don’t fall into any of the pitfalls which many expatriates have encountered. Just make sure that you have covered all the legalities, that you can trust your lawyer/attorney, and that all the paperwork is correctly filed. It seems a hassle at the time. But it will enable you to enjoy and profit from your new property for the rest of your life.

The Truth About Debt Reduction Systems

Tuesday, November 4th, 2008

If you’re drowning in debt, you’re probably wondering if there is anything out there that can actually help you. Whether it’s credit card debt, debt from loans or something else – you should know that you’re not alone. Debt reduction systems can work to help you pay off your debt quickly, but the trick is to choose the correct one. This article discusses the truth about debt reduction systems and whether or not they can work for you.

Do Your Research -

The first thing you should do when you hear about a debt reduction system that you think will work is do your research. Check into what the system is and what you will need to do in order to follow it. Are there any reviews from others who have used the system successfully? There are many people who have paid down their debt using systems that are legitimate and valid. Make sure you check up on the system and find out if it has worked for anyone else. Also, apply your common sense to the ideas of the debt reduction system. If you feel funny about it or think it’s a scam, it may be! Use your intuition and do your research before starting any debt reduction system.

Does It Cost Money?

There are many people who are willing to charge those who have a lot of debt in order to help them pay off their debt. While it is sad and unfortunate, it’s true that many people will try to cash in on anything or anyone. Be careful if the debt reduction system you’re looking into costs money – there are some legitimate services out there that can really, really help you. However, there are also those that you could figure out by yourself but they are still willing to charge you a pricey fee in order to give you their ‘secrets.’ If you are looking into a debt reduction system that costs money, make sure you really check up on it and see if it’s legitimate or if you will only be getting scammed if you try it.

Is It Sensible?

While you will probably have to sacrifice some of your indulgences in order to get your debt paid down, you also need to continue having extra money in your pocket. Take a look at the debt reduction system and determine how sensible it is. For instance, are you required to sell off everything you own that’s not nailed down? Obviously, something like this is not very sensible. You also need money to reward yourself so you don’t become discouraged while working only to pay off a debt and your monthly bills. If the debt reduction system still allows for small extras, it’s probably a pretty sensible one. Determine this before starting a debt reduction system!

While debt can be a major pain, so are some of the debt reduction systems that people come up with. When you’re looking into one, use the tips and suggestions above as well as your common sense to determine if it’s the right one for you!

Google Chrome – Review

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

Anyone that uses Google, (the qualifier for this is the fact you are human) will have noticed that beneath that iconic search bar is a new link, directing you to Google Chrome, a Google web browser that as with all things Google, comes with a hype that could perhaps be hugely unmerited.

Before we get to the ins and outs of its functionality, appearance etc, let’s just take a look at the history of the web browser, and why Google would take this route.

The web browser was really born in the late 1980′s, when a variety of technologies, most famous of course the WorldWideWeb, laid the foundation for the first web browser, which brought together a variety of existing and new software and hardware technologies. Web browsers communicate with Web servers primarily using HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) to fetch webpages, which are located by means of a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). In simple terms, they interpret the information that webmasters want you to see, and present it to you in the form of a webpage.

Historically, Microsofts’ Internet Explorer has dominated the market, and currently still holds approximately 75% market share, Mozillas’ Firefox pulls an impressive 20%, and the rest divided between the likes of Safari, K-Meleon, Flock, Konqueror, and Opera.

The market is packed with perfectly capable alternatives…ok, perhaps perfect capable is stretching their achievements, but there are many variations out there that offer you slightly different takes on the idea, and personally Firefox is my browser of choice, but thats largely due to the fact it is not IE.

So why a browser? Well, Google have a suite of Applications, Programs and Indentures (API’s), most notably Google Maps, Android, Google Earth, and Gears, in addition of course to their search services. Could Google be aiming to unify their API’s with Chrome? This is an opinion I’ve seen and heard touted about the internet, but I feel there is a far bigger picture here.

Google Chrome may appear to have its teeth cut for a battle with Internet Explorer, but the Microsoft product that Google is ultimately setting its itself up to destroy is the Windows operating system. In reality, the search titan hopes that its browser, in the short term, will simply make it easier for businesses to deploy their online applications.

Anyway, that’s one for the future, right now we have the issue of where Google Chrome fits in to the current landscape, and my suggestion is that we tuck it discreetly behind a bush and forget about it for the foreseeable future. With it being Google, that may prove to be more difficult than it should be, but in the core elements of its functionality it offers nothing new, nothing exciting, and certainly nothing to challenge Firefox for my attention.

Google’s first major publicity of Chrome came in the form of a 38-page comic that resembled the in-flight instructions of a plane more than it did the release of a major weapon in Google’s considerable armoury. Suffice to say Marvel will sleep easy. The sedate nature of its release suggests Google really aren’t all that bothered about the success of this project, at least not in the near future, and were really just hoping for a little bit of the limelight following Yahoo’s protracted kissing and cuddling with Microsoft before their acrimonious fall-out and subsequent fisticuffs and chest-pumping. Google love a headline, if they were a film star they’d surely become Scientologists and marry some failed actress from Dawsons Creek, but where they normally maneuver that attention well, here I feel they fail on the basic principle of the product letting them down.

They have introduced something called an Omnibox, which is just the search bar wearing a tutu, and fails miserably as a nonpartisan addition to the browser. People have the option with most other browsers of selecting home page etc, but this bar doubles as a search engine on … you’ve guessed it, Google. The merging of the address bar and search bar gives Google too much control over navigation. It separates companies and website operators from their website addresses and brands. Companies spend heavily to establish and maintain brands. Google has just imposed itself between consumers and businesses. Direct navigation has now become proprietary search, whereby Google uses its discretion to filter out web addresses and domains that it deems less relevant. I object heavily to this and see it as no less than bullying, so for this alone I have boycotted the browser, but more poignantly, they have thus far failed to release a Beta version for the Mac. As a Mac user i find this rather insulting, and as an opponent of Microsoft and every filthy moral they stand for I am infuriated.

I shall leave it at this: as a writer/consumer this story is fun, it sometimes even shakes hands with endearment, but as an employee of a web development company, and having test-driven it on a PC, I am more excited by the recession thats’ somewhat fallaciously drowning the spirit of a perpetually melancholic UK. Chrome will not affect things for my employers within the next 3 years at least, and I predict that it probably never will.

Cash Flow For Kids

Friday, October 17th, 2008

The basic ideas about money are simple enough that quite young children can grasp them. For example, Robert Kiyosaki’s best-selling Cashflow 101 game comes in a simplified version, Cashflow For Kids. Classic games such as Stock Market and Monopoly provide great learning opportunities, too.

We have played Robert Kiyosaki’s board game Cashflow with our kids since they were very small, at first in a simplified form, but from about nine or ten they were playing the full version. We have also played games like Monopoly and Stock Market, and taken the time during the games to explain the real-life money lessons explored in the games.

A while ago one of the girls, aged about ten, during a game of Cashflow, looked up from the board and said “This is real life, isn’t it? This is what you are doing in real life. You have the apartment that you rent out and the businesses … and you won’t let us buy doodads with your money! We have to buy them with our own money!”

The trick is to find the money ideas expressed in a way that is engaging for kids. There are some great story books which include important money concepts. George Clason’s The Richest Man in Babylon is a classic, and our girls read Robert Kiyosaki’s Rich Dad, Poor Dad for themselves from the age of ten or so.

Whether or not your kids are earning money outside the home, you can use your child’s allowance to start teaching them about saving and investing. Teach them to set aside some money, for saving and for giving to charity, each time money comes in. You can use a visible method, like keeping cash in three separate jars, or you can keep the pocket money as entries in a book, and record deposits and withdrawals. The records, can be a useful teaching tool, especially if you note what the money was being spent on.

Our daughters have been in business since they were between nine and twelve, and all of them are currently working on internet businesses. They soak up information rapidly, and are very good at spotting adults making money mistakes.

Keeping language positive is very important. I had to train myself out of saying “We can’t afford that,” or “we don’t have the money for that”, and instead replace those statements with ones like “we choose to spend our money on other things”, or “I don’t want to buy that for you”. I usually followed up with “you can have the thing, you just need to buy it with your own money”.

If they didn’t have enough money, I would say “well, you’ll need to earn some more, then,” and follow up with suggestions for things they could do to earn money – Grandma’s ironing, or extra chores at home, or washing the neighbor’s dog.

Kids may need lots of help at first to think of creative ways to provide value for other people (and be paid in return). Even a small amount of cash flow is very motivating for kids, though, so once they have a little experience they quickly develop ideas of their own!

Erosion or Rainwater Pollution – Which Comes First?

Tuesday, October 14th, 2008

Over the past century, runaway development has paved over forests, fields and wetlands across the country. Along with urbanization has come the problem of “urban stormwater” – rainwater that washes over dirty surfaces such as roads, buildings and lawns and becomes a major source of pollution in rivers, lakes and bays. While much has been achieved in the past 30 years to limit pollution from easily identifiable sources, such as watersheds, efforts to control pollution from these diffuse sources are still in their infancy. Although the Clean Water Act mandates stormwater control, local governments have been slow to respond.

This report, however, focuses on runoff pollution from developed areas, which occurs when stormwater carries away a wide variety of contaminants as it runs across rooftops, roads, parking lots, baseball diamonds, construction sites, golf courses , lawns, and other surfaces in our cities and suburbs. The oily sheen on rainwater in roadside gutters is but one common example of urban runoff pollution.

Nationwide, sediment is a leading pollutant of our waterways.

Rainwater that washes over roads, buildings and lawns carries pollution into oceans, rivers and lakes. Impervious surfaces increased 41 percent during the 1990s compared to an 8-percent increase in population. The rate of increase of impervious surface implies there will be more rapid delivery of nutrients to streams and an increase in sediment erosion.
Recovery of the Chesapeake Bay

Federal rules force constructors and contractors disturbing an acre or more of land during any type of construction project to develop a plan for preventing erosion and controlling sediment at the construction site.

One solution is to use porous materials and systems that allow stormwater to be filtered by the soil. Instead of solid materials, paving can be designed to allow water to flow through into the soil. Catch basins for stormwater are now recognized as an effective method to minimize pollution. One suggestion is to direct residential drain pipes to empty into the yard rather than a ditch. Individuals can help limit pollution by being careful with fertilizers and chemicals.

Stormwater runoff and non-point source pollution are the number one threat to water quality. Stormwater pollutes sensitive trout streams with sediment, pesticides, fertilizers, and causes erosion, flooding, and loss of habitat.

“Storm water can be controlled at its source” by “something as simple as planting trees,” using more sensible tree pit design and installing green roofs that collect storm water. Storm water can also be naturally absorbed through vegetation, green areas and impervious surfaces, the councilman said.

“But, it’s what’s underneath the ground – a natural filtration system – that really makes the bioretention systems work. The vegetation and soils remove pollutants from the stormwater, such as nutrients, suspended solids, salt, and petroleum byproducts. The goal is to reduce flooding by slowing the flow and to have cleaner stormwater throughout the James Brook/Jacob’s Meadow watershed, which flows directly into the harbor”

Development on forested steep slopes causes massive erosion, sedimentation of streams and wetlands, downstream flooding, and destruction of prime habita.

Landowners with property along streams, wetlands and moist bottomlands are encouraged to protect these riparian areas by planting trees that will create buffer zones, prevent soil erosion and attract wildlife.

Citizens can make a difference by removing from their private property invasive plant species that contribute to poor water filtering and soil erosion, and planting native trees and shrubbery that increase absorption of rainwater and improve water filtering efficiency.

By adopting ‘green infrastructure’ solutions, such as green roofs, permeable pavement, wetland restoration, and smarter design of street tree plantings, stormwater can be captured where it falls and used to green the city. It introduces benchmark environmental indicators as well as 80 specific measures, to capture hard data which will be used to build up a clear picture of trends and pressures over time.

The problem extends beyond neighborhood water runoff. Fertilizer runoff into the Mississippi River is blamed for the dead zone that occurs in the Gulf of Mexico. The same problem occurs from residential areas where lawn fertilizer finds its way into the waterways. Additionally, chemicals, human and animal waste wash into our water systems.

The Conservation Reserve Enhancement Program (CREP) is a voluntary land retirement program that helps farmers and other agricultural producers protect environmentally sensitive land, decrease erosion, restore wildlife habitat, and safeguard ground and surface water.

Contaminated runoff from freeways is the largest and most polluted part of overall stormwater runoff.

Caltrans will start cleaning up the runoff using a variety of innovative solutions to capture the mess before it reaches the beach.

Cleanup options include sand traps, catch basins and new porous pavement surfaces that catch polluted runoff and absorb the contaminants.

Polluted runoff is the number one water pollution problem in America, Caltrans deserves credit for blazing a pathway that other agencies and cities should now follow.

Action is well overdue to address our deteriorating water quality.

http://www.erosioncontrolforum.com clearly identifies the decline in water quality in areas dominated by agricultural and urban land use, and offers solutions to these troubling trends. Both agriculture and local bodies must add more action to their rhetoric. It will be sad if agriculture uses urban water quality results as pretext for inaction. While the median bacteria count in urban streams is higher than the median count on rural steams, the worst rural waterways are far, far worse than the worst urban stream.

5 Ways to Save Money

Monday, October 13th, 2008

In this day and age of prices on just about everything running wild, everyone is looking for ways to save money. With rising gas prices, the cost on food is also climbing. Milk used to be considered a necessity in a household. Now it is more of a luxury with prices being between $4 and $5 a gallon. You may notice that a gallon of milk is about the same price as a gallon of gas now. This is not a coincidence. You may also see fresh fruit and vegetables becoming more expensive.

Here you will find 5 ways to save money, especially if you have a medium to large size family.

1. Coupon Clipping: This is an idea that was once used all the time by nearly every family. It may have gone out of style a bit with the introduction of generic and store brand items, but many families are finding that coupons are still a great way to save at the checkout counter. There are some people who form a Coupon Clipping Club. They meet once a week to trade coupons they have clipped.

2. Instant Milk: While this may not be the best tasting stuff in the world, it can be used to cook and bake with. All it takes is water and the dry instant milk mix. This is a great way to stretch your milk each week, while using the homogenized milk for drinking.

3. Fruit and Vegetable Stands: In most parts of the country, you will find little stands set up on the side of the road with fresh fruit and vegetables for sale. These are grown by the people selling them and are, by far, much cheaper than the produce you find in grocery stores. You can nearly always find some great deals at these little stands, and the produce is always much fresher than that bought in stores.

4. Alternative Transportation: Most people have grown too accustomed to the luxury of driving or riding everywhere they go. With the currently outrageous gas prices, now is the time to re-discover walking and bike riding. If you only have a few blocks to go, and the weather permits, try walking to your destination. Riding a bicycle is also a great alternative to using your vehicle. The exercise is great, and you will see that even this small change in your routine will help save at the gas pumps.

5. Less Fast Food: While we all enjoy a bit of a treat now and then, too many people tend to race to the fast food restaurants for lunch, dinner, and even breakfast. You will notice just how quickly this money can add up. For people on the go, there are many ways to prepare something for breakfast the night before, as well as making your own lunch even if you work outside the home. For busy lifestyles, there are crock pots which will do the cooking for you while you are away.

You may have thought of some of these 5 ways to save money already, but just are too rushed, stressed or tired to try them. In this very fast paced word we live in, that is totally understandable. However, make a deal with yourself. Try these suggestions for just one week. At the end of the week, add up how much money you saved. You may be surprised.

Make Your Fortune With Free Government Publications

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

This is meant to be informative only.  This is not to be taken as legal advice.

Very surprisingly, only a small percentage of the U.S.A. population takes advantage of the wealth of informative material provided by the world’s largest publisher – the U.S. Government Printing Office.

Here is a source of priceless, accurate and official information which is reported and written by experts. Almost every conceivable subject has been reported upon in detail in some government publication – topics such as energy, employment, health, business, investments, science and technology, education, careers, transportation, veterans and personal benefits, consumer advice, foreign trade, law, space, food and diet, astronomy, gardening, medical, maintenance, housing, money management, equipment, hobbies, travel – the list goes on and on.

These publications are available to you upon request. In fact, you indirectly helped pay for them. A part of your tax contribution is allocated to operate the government printing office.

Many of these publications feature business sand personal matters that may directly help you make or save money. This report, however, will outline the most simple and ideal method to reap a huge financial gain from these publications – selling this information by mail.

You undoubtedly have noted ads offering reports on government surplus, oil lotteries, land acquisitions, energy, etc. These ads appear in many national magazines monthly. year after year. Such reports contain information extracted from government publications. Often they are copied word for word. The “insiders” know how and where to get this valuable information free, or at low cost, then use this material to earn huge profits for themselves.

Few people realize that government publications are not copyrighted. Anyone has the authority to use this material for his own personal benefit. That includes copying it word-for-word if desired, reproducing it, and selling the information in the form of books, manuals or reports.

From this vast source of published material are many thousands of ideas you can adopt to prepare an informative publication which can be profitably sold by mail.

The first step, obviously, is to find out which publications are available, what subjects they cover and where they can be obtained. The second step is to select topics which would inform, appeal to and attract a large number of people who would be willing to buy your information by mail. The third step, is to compile this information into a book, manual or report, get it printed, then go about the business of marketing it profitably.

Step 1

Besides a huge volume of official documents, the government printing office issues about 25,000 other booklets and reports with topics that concern and interest the general pubic. The government also publishes guides which lists and describes new issues when they become available.

Write to the Consumer Information Center, Pueblo, CO 81009. Request to be placed on their mailing list to receive the “Consumer Information Catalog” which is issued periodically during each year. Also request to receive “Selected U.S. Government Publications” from: Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC 20402.

Many public libraries stock these catalogs and some government publications. You can check for titles of current and back issues and order anything that interests you or copy any information you need. You may also find copies at other U.S. and State agency offices and perhaps at your local chamber of commerce office.

Publications may also be obtained from government offices such as the U.S. Department of Commerce, U.S. Department of Agriculture, etc. These agencies offer many publications pertinent to matters in their field. For example, the Department of Commerce can provide data and information assistance in various business matters, foreign trade, etc.

The ruling powers in Washington are cutting funds to many agencies. It is likely that in future not as many free publications will be available as were printed in the past. The low cost of any government publication, however, is still a tremendous bargain. Never hesitate to pay a small amount for valuable information that could be the source of financial benefits for you.

Step 2

Which topics to consider for your publication? What type of printed information will the public buy? Basically, to sell successfully by mail, your product must fill a People need or desire. It must offer a specific appeal factor that will make the public want to obtain the product. Some of the strongest appeals are found in products which promise to help people:

Make Money Be Safe & Secure Have Fun & Enjoyment Save Money Eliminate Problems Find Out Where to Get Save Time & Effort Be Popular Something Beneficial Enjoy Comfort Do Things Better Something Useful Enjoy Health Gain Success

Thus, your publication should deal with the “How To” and “Where To” type of subjects. This is the main information the buying public seeks and will buy. The stronger information appeal your publication offers, the larger number of people will be attracted to you offer. This factor will translate into a greater sales volume and ultimately higher profits.

Emphasized again, the subject matter of your publication must interest and appeal to a large number of prospects. Among large group categories are: households, blue collar and white collar workers, opportunity seekers, investors, dieters, recipe fanciers, gardeners, teenagers, senior citizens, mail order aspirants, health and exercise enthusiasts, fix-it-uppers, hobbyists, sportsmen and many other specific classes of people seeking helpful information to fulfill their desires and needs.

Step 3

When you decide upon a suitable subject or subject or subjects, you next step is to compile the information into your own publication. You can copy word-for-word from the government literature, extract portions of the copy, express the ideas in your own words, or add some of your own ideas and thoughts to enhance the subject and provide the reader with additional information.

The size of your publication will depend upon how many words are necessary to fully cover the subject. Provide every essential and important detail so the reader will completely understand and benefit from the information. Don’t skimp, but don’t include anything that is superfluous or inappropriate to the subject. Give the customer at least what he expects – more if possible. A happy, satisfied customer is a confident prospect for your future offers.

For example, a publication entitled “Second Opportunities”, explaining a large number of money-making activities, might require a booklet form of many pages. A publication entitled “How to Grow Prize-Winning Roses” might be a report of just a few pages.

As stated previously, you can reproduce any government printing, even page for page, if that size would fit the style of your publication. to test your offer, you can get initial copies mimeographed, but the best-looking reproduction can be provided by an offset printer. He can reproduce printed copy. Type your own copy on a machine with carbon ribbon. It will provide clear, dark copy which the printer can reproduce with sharp results.

Adopt a title for your publication that will create attention. The title in a descriptive circular, or stated in a classified or space ad, can affect sales. The title should explain the subject matter in as few words as possible. Bring out as many of the appeals listed in Step 2. Yet, keep the title short without sacrificing any word or phrase that might keep a reader form becoming a customer. Look through magazines for titles of books and reports sold by mail. You will get ideas for preparing titles to attract the mail order buyer.

What price to charge for your publication? Only testing can determine the right price. The right price is the selling price that brings in the most profit Not total sales necessarily, but profit… the bottom line in any business activity. Set a price initially based on the suggestions in the following paragraph. Later tests may determine that you can make more profit by charging more and selling less. Or, tests may prove that by lowering the price and selling more units, you earn more total profits. Often the introduction of a new mail order product requires testing… and testing again… until the most effective sales copy and the right selling price is established to provide the most profit from each promotion.

To make big money selling information by mail, consider pricing your publication at least 10 times its cost. And, that’s just the norm for a multi-paged publication. A report of just a few pages must be sold for 15 to 20 times its cost to realize adequate profits from promotions. To start, get just a few copies printed. but, don’t base your selling price on this cost. Request the printer to quote you on 1,000 and higher quantities. This will be the volume you will be purchasing if your publication is successful and that cost should be the basis for initially pricing your publication.

To promote sales of your publication, use one or all of the usual mail order methods… classified ads, space ads and direct mail.

Classified ads are seldom productive if the advertiser solicits orders for items priced over $3.00 directly from the ad. Classified ads are mainly used to obtain inquiries for higher-priced items. So what can you do with a publication that must sell for $5.00 or $6.00? You should promote this publication through space ads or include the publication in a descriptive circular or catalog featuring this publication among other offers of your own or that of other publishers.

Space ads are what the terms implies; they feature more space than a classified ad. This greater space allows for bold headlines, more details about the offer and inducements for the reader to send in an order. If space permits, an order form is included in the ad.

Direct mail consists of People your offer to a list of names. These names could be your customer list or names obtained from a list broker. Use only name lists that will be responsive to your offer. For example, an offer for a gardening publication should not be sent to a list of auto mechanics. Such a mailing would stand little chance for success. Also, it would hardly pay to send out a mailing for a $5.00 or $6.00 offer. Use direct mail to promote $10.00 or higher items, or send circulars or catalogs featuring several publications to receive orders for multiple items and higher dollar average per sale.

Selling information by mail profitably, requires application of the basic methods used by other successful mail order operators. This report, of course, cannot provide a complete course in mail order techniques. Obtain some books which explain how to operate a mail order business efficiently.

To summarize, check over the list of government publications that might provide suitable material for your own book or report. Then send for it. Determine if the contents can be the basis for a publication with strong appeal to a large group of prospects. Compile this information into an interesting book or report. Promote your offer slowly and carefully at the start. If promotional tests are favorable you can increase your advertising and promotion efforts, sell larger volumes of your publication and earn larger profits.

Follow these procedures faithfully and you could be on you way to earning a fortune – making your start with free government publications.
